That performance: 1000x 2 sec bursts from one battery. I don't think that is possible with a battery pack...

This things scares the sh*t out of me. If it can carbonize human skin instantly, you can bet many people will go blind. Unexpected reflections of shiny objects.
QUOTE The rifles will be powered by a rechargeable lithium battery pack similar to those found in smartphones. It can fire more than 1,000 “shots”, each lasting no more than two seconds.[/quote]
No more than 2 seconds can also mean 0.01 seconds.

Let me do some stupid calculations (will be 100% wrong)...
Energy requirement to heat up 1 g water (skin) by 400°K:
4.19 J/g x 1 g x 400 = 1676 J
Electric charge requirement (J = VAs):
1676 VAs / 3.6 V = 465.6 As = 129.3 mAh
Modern rechargeable LI battery:
2000 mAh / 50 g = 40 mAh/g
Battery needed per shot:
129.3 mAh / 40 mAh/g = 3.2 g
LI battery requirement for "1000 shot mag/battery":
3.2 g * 1000 = 3.2 kg (7.0 lbs)
Weapon weight: 3 kg (6.6 lbs)
Seems like there is no spare wight or waste energy calculated.

I am not a weapon nor a laser expert. Seeing that you can legally buy 1 Watt laser pointers shaped like a hand flashlight under 100 USD and the potential damage they may cause, I fear the multibeam ones. Never underestimate an idiot with such a thing.
Also dirt cheap to shoot down multi million dollar fighters or blind the pilot, so I can understand the potential market value for poor fighters.

the more interesting thing about this is that the article was posted on SCMP (South China Morning Post), a once-well respected Hong Kong newspaper. very unlike them to be posting blatant Chinese propaganda pieces, which do pour out of state media (think Xinghua) like out of a tap. i guess Jack Ma's purchasing of this newspaper really was the nail in the coffin that Hong Kong people feared. too bad.
PS. yes, i too would have put a scope with range/wind adjustment knobs on my laser pew pew rifle.

can you even get a decent scope without them?

No, you have to reinvent them.

Would you even need a wind adjustment for a laser? How much does wind actually change the path of a laser?

You're the physicist here
