The history of open-source Allegiance is paved with the bodies of dead code branches, forum flame wars, and personal vendettas. But a community remains because people still love the game.

Anything that can be done to retain players with those setup downloads?

We could also potentially form a group within Elite Dangerous and get some advertisement from promoting the game with that group of players.

Holy @#(! that's a good idea. How many of us play Elite Dangerous and how feasible of an idea is that?

The installer needs a complete rewamp, and we should decide if we want to re record the training missions so that they reflect the new keymap, or leave them broken.

Is there a user-created introduction video that could be linked within the installer? Something to pique

Not just the trailer we have posted on the site, but something including voices that provides the core concepts of gameplay.
Like
"Scouting and probing"
"Techpaths and strategy"
"Dogfights"
"Territory control"
"Research and economy"
"Ints are the best thing ever and are your only family now why don't you have 50kb"
etc.

Biggest problem in player retention is the vastness of the game and understanding it. We could make some short 5-8 minute videos that break down concepts and strap it in with the installer so they have some understanding before they even start the game. I'd be happy to work on these with some other volunteers. Maybe a video editor as I suck at editing videos.

If we can't increase the amount of people that discover the page and download the game, we can increase the players we retain within that demographic.

Along with the keymap problem, can we also update the textures that come with the default installer? Use the textures that come with Mesial's texture mods. After using those textures, looking at the default game textures is very bland and puts a bad taste in my mouth.

Wanting that sort of thing was why we setup the Training Multimedia forum. Don't know if there would be anything good for your purposes there.

The purpose of those videos are a few steps farther in-depth than my intention was going to be. Rather than be a meal of information, my intentions are more of a sample, using concepts that someone with no knowledge of the game can relate to, and touching on a general idea. The current videos in there are about two steps too far in. After the player has committed to wanting to play the game and they've grasped the basics, that's where the challenge of Allegiance's vastness can be pitched to a player. That's where AFS videos come into play.

That's where they commit to a game because it challenges them. They've sunk in the time to already have enough fun that they would like to get better. I want to reduce that time between interest and commitment. SHOTGUN WEDDING

So you're a new player on the block and you're wondering what the $#@! is half of the @#(! we're talking about. I don't understand how to do any of this, I don't even know how to fly yet, and that in itself is going to take a week. I fly around and hit buttons and hope I don't get podded. What the $#@! is half this @#(! on the minimap on the left and oh god I'm dead, let's go fly small game sy out9biggame.

You get the general idea of what goals your team must accomplish with basic techpaths and given a general idea of how research times can vary and how each faction has a little something special to give them their own flavor of play. You make them say to themselves "Hey, there's a lot more to this than just flying around and shooting @#(! and dropping probes"
Right now, when you download the game, you aren't seeing that because there's so much information to collect that you can't break it down in chunks, you burn out before you even get a chance to start understanding it.

TL;DR version:

Videos will discuss concepts and focus on hooking a new player's interest without providing in-depth education, so they do not become overwhelmed and quit because they have so much to learn before they "get good"

I'll drop a post in the forum if anyone wants to explore this idea more and do a rough draft before we actually talk about recording any videos.

Good/bad idea? Anybody have comments?

Making more videos and multimedia has been a large focus of the current iteration of cadet. TA's done a fantastic job so far.

If anyone is wanting to contribute good content, let me know.
