If we are to disband all squads and rebuild with four squads, who among you would be willing to lead a new squad? So far we have three squad leaders ready to go: Dome; Drizzo; Thallium. We need one more. Who among you can lead a squad and be vouched for by four veterans who will agree to play with you, and one to be your Assistant Squad Leader. If you can do this then you are a worthy squad leader and will be outfitted with the rest of your squad.

The deadline is 3 weeks. July 8th

For anyone who has done this before, what does the role entail?

I'd say an SL is three things mostly: a recruiter, a commander, and a coach.

The "commanding" bit isn't set in stone; some SLs delegate the responsibility off in SGs, but it does make the other two responsibilities easier. The SL is main guy who people look at to decide which squad to join. They need to have a good rapport especially with other vets in order to draw a good team.

They also need the ability to look back at game results and figure out what worked and what didn't and adjust accordingly, to figure out how to use each person on their team to their maximum potential. An SL is a person who can take a bad loss without throwing in the towel, giving up or flying off the handle, but someone who can take the experience and make it instructive for the people on their team.

Patience, charisma, and common sense.

It certainly helps if they are capable of doing those things, it's not really required for a good SL. Someone with good self motivation and organization really is more important. Someone, if they aren't capable of commanding and training is able to deligate to the best people who can. Being active and positive is also pretty important as it all trickles down.

Besides everything everyone has said before me, being a squad leader entails being active and driven enough to make your squad a success. Success is determined by how fun your games are, and how you are able to grow from defeat.

Specifically, you have to schedule games vs other squads and make sure your people are well aware of the need to be there.

Then you figure out a way to train your people so they actually get better so you can win more.
Squads are where the best Allegiance training happens because there is a competitive goal behind it: make my team better than your team so we win the game.

Unless you're Grav, in which case success is determined by how boring your games are.

He lead the squad through RT's only period of successful squad games - he was the squad leader.
