No. If the defaults were 1024, let's just use them instead.

I just loaded the textures Factoid has been working on.

Game was on 1024 max texture size when I created game
switched to 2048, launched 5 draconium games on pc005. 5th one crashed.
started allegiance again, launched 10 draconium games on pc005, no crashes.
launched 10 more games - one as each faction - no crashes.

starting changing game resolutions - crashes.
launched game again, more game resolution changes - more crashes.

launching over 20 games in which I hit the loadout screen, launched from base, resigned, and only crashed once, seems pretty stable for bug-ridden Allegiance packed with high res textures. (I was crashing on launch almost every single time on PC005 before Factoid optimized a lot of the texture pack)

trying to go from lowest resolution, to highest resolution, back down to lowest resolution, seems to consistently cause crashes.
(seems like a bad setup, anyway - should not have to change through each resolution to get to the one you want - this really needs to be changed somehow)

5$ says alleg isn't properly freeing resources when texture / resolution settings change. Try setting it to the desired settings, exiting, restarting and seeing how long you can go without a crash.

to clarify: when i'm talking about resolution changes, I mean display resolution, not texture pack size

I know. The screen buffer is it's own kind of texture.

High Rez Textures

Here's what should be the final texture pack. Metz doesn't seem to have any problems, I was able to play as well.

Yes. You can distribute PNGs. As long as you also have a text-based bmp.mdl that loads the PNG into MDL.

Here is an application that does it for you. https://github.com/AllegianceZone/PngToMDL
