I know $#@! all about doing this, or any of the software associated with it. A family friend recently asked about a good program to do this with and I was at a loss. I know there are peeps who do that sort of thing around here, so I was wondering, what are some good free (or cheap) products to do this with? It probably doesnt have to be very complicated, just editing music and videos with probably some fancy transitions etc.

thanks in advance!

Personally, I like Final Cut Pro and Avid, but those are both considered 'professional' editing programs. Final Cut Pro is a bit more intuitive and 'amateur-friendly'.

Another one is VirtualDub, though it is not a trueblue video editor, but a pre and post processor. I simply use it to splice AVI's together.
The only one I can remember should be the video editor done by the zweistein team. Google Zweistein video editor.
Unfortunately, the freeware stuff I have come across does not have very good help. You get what you pay for.
Simply google freeware video editors, there is at least one page which reviews such software. Unfortunately I did not bookmark it.

You cant really get good free editing software.

You have to pay for this sort of stuff unfortunately, Sony pro and Adobe pro are the best I have used commercially by a long shot.

OpenShot!
It's easy, powerful and it runs on Linux :)
No sweat for the last part though (no sweat at all if you have a linux box), just use UBUNTU 11.10 live CD and you are good to go without installing anything.

Yea Vegas video is easy to get up and running with.

If he needs it for a quick job then look no further than the 30 day trial.
