It seems there are tons of free text / chat apps for the Android. They claim to be "the best" or so. ChatPing, TextMe and ebuddyXMS to name a few. I do not want to install a bunch of them together.
Which is practical and cheap on data usage? I do not need voice / video / photo / music, just a simple ip text (with or without emoticons) exchange is enough. Suggestions are welcome.

WhatsApp is pretty nice and integrates well with your phonebook, however like many free IM apps (although technically after 1st year whatsapp is like $2 per annum) it can only be used with other people who have whatsapp so it is only good if you get other people to use it as well.
Other then that the skype app is pretty good and gives you the option to make skype calls as well as just IM'ing so you can communicate with people on computers as well, but only if they are signed in to skype obviously.

I have an android, and it sucks. There is nothing good about android. That is all.

Skype refuses to install, error 120, read that it requires a 600+ Mhz processor, mine is 416Mhz. Whatsapp seems nice. Will look it up at marketplace.

Not being that fancy over here. The standard android built-in gmail + gtalk is something I generally use for communication besides (ofcourse) the traditional methods.
