It was most certainly a big problem for Raum.

Wow, that many people actually fell for it? and paid that much?
I would figure some old people would fall for it since they don't know much about what's going on in the internet, but still...

No, it was a problem for my clients, though. Some of us have better things to do than snort hot sauce.

You have to remember that the average person didn't touch a computer until the "Internet bubble" around the year 2000. I have been amazed at how many normally average adults told me "Well, if it comes up on the screen, I have a tendency to believe it". And yes, the elders are especially vulnerable.

Granny: "Who would do such a thing?

Me: "You poor, sweet, naive thing".

Can't count how many times I heard these:

"It asked me if I wanted to continue, and I wanted to. So I hit ok."

- and my other favorite -

"I didn't do anything this time, I SWEAR!!"

So, two thumbs up for global law enforcement!

Thank god!!!

What do you think would be a fitting punishment(s) for them?

Several decades of HelpDesk for no money cleaning off viruses the hard way -- no OS re-installs.

(edit -- and no remoting in. They have to go to people's houses so they can experience the full horror of grandma's dustbunny collection and necklaces made of cat fur. From the "artist:" The hair was collected during grooming sessions from my indoor, purebred Ragamuffin cat. His hair is very soft; almost rabbit like when touched. It took many grooming sessions to collect the hair, then more time to felt it into solid round balls. Finally, it was strung using silver wire.)
