Here's what I've read recently and enjoyed:
the company war universe stuff by Cherryl
the takeshi kovacs series by Richard Morgan
culture series stuff by Ian Banks, along with a couple of his other sci fi books
the vorkosigan saga by Bujold
the first few honor harrington books by webber
ender's game series by orsin scott card
I've also already read just about all the sci fi classics by Asimov, Heinlien, Clarke, etc.
I just finished thirteen by Richard Morgan, which was quite good. So what should I read now?

Look up the Uplift Universe books by David Brin.
The series starts with "Sundiver", but if you only intend to read one, go for the 2nd one "Startide Rising"

Some of the Honor Harrington books are online for free at Baen. I'll link you if you haven't read those. Not great literature, but somewhat entertaining military Sci-Fi anyway.

Takeshi Kovacs is pretty damn good.
If you haven't run across it yet give The Forever War a chance

Avoid like the plague. One of those people who can't write characters to save his life. I suspect he's got asberger's or something like that. He really, really doesn't understand human behaviour and motivations at all. Alastair Reynolds is similar and just as bad. It seems that the "new wave" british Sci-Fi is written by sociopaths.
Here's the link to that Honor Harrington book I promised.
On Basilisk Station - David Weber.
