You know, I worked on a core that mimiked homeworld:cataclysm's techtree. For instance, instead of researching a ship type you research an engine type which will unlock the basic type of that ship, then research new weapons to get alternate versions of that ship.
So, like, res:frigates + res:missiles -> Basic frigate + Missile frigate.
But res: cruisers + res:missiles -> Basic cruisers get missiles.
Never finished it because I got bored at the "balance weapons, hitpoints, economy, and research times" stage.

Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.

I was wondering how research should be done since the original didn't have research costs. You had limited 'research slots' depending on how many you built.juckto wrote:QUOTE (juckto @ May 27 2011, 01:33 AM) You know, I worked on a core that mimiked homeworld:cataclysm's techtree. It was pointless in the campaign, but in multiplayer there was some importance in how you manage it, but it wasn't an investment aside from the cost of the research ship itself, which became useless once all research was complete.
Do you suppose you could direct me on where to get started on configuring and testing something like this? Any "Core development for dummies"?
I might not even bother, I don't know how many people here give a @#(! about Homeworld. It would just be another unused core.

I had assumed this was a necropost.
HW FTW, but it really would be just another unused core. Even as much as I love it (and wish Relic would quit printing money with the 40k franchise and spend some of it), you would just be waisting your time.
