Have you guys been following this story? I wonder what is going on. I can see how trading a commando team for couple of P-3 Orion's can make sense on the paper, but how do you get a group of commando's to do a suicide mission for such an aim? What about going after the chinise engineers?
I really wish I knew what's going on there.

It was payback by Pirates from Somalia, it's that simple.

I raised an eyebrow at that description too. Sounds verymadpeople wrote:QUOTE (madpeople @ May 25 2011, 04:49 PM) <- thought people only dual wielded in computer games and movies (or people imitating such things).

Well... be that as it may Raum, something did happen over there. The whole thing is hugely embarassing for Pakistan, so they didn't just make the whole thing up. Or rather, if they did, it's to cover up something even more embarassing.raumvogel wrote:QUOTE (raumvogel @ May 25 2011, 08:24 PM) I have a tendency to ignore stories like these as they are merely fodder for conspiracy theorists.

Yeah I don't get how this makes any sense. As a "terrorist" attack it makes no sense because it attacks a military target and few civilians, so it causes no "terror" per se. As a military strike, it makes little sense because you're sending a highly trained team on a suicide mission? That doesn't seem very smart or very cost effective, unless the target is REALLY high value.
The story mentions chinese engineers but doesn't explain why they were there or what they were doing. I am guessing missile/nuclear @#(!? If so, a suicide mission to take them out begins to make some sense from a military perspective. Of course if that was the aim, the mission was an abject failure since they got away.
As to Adept's question of how to get people to go on a suicide mission, different militaries of all kinds throughout history have found ways to do it, often with religion. See e.g. islamic suicide bombers today and japanese kamikazis during WWII. Even US troops have been known to go on suicide missions, or at least do suicidal things like throw themselves on grenades, given proper motivation.
