I just got done with MCT and I'm heading to Camp Johnson, Camp Lejuene, NC for another month for MOS school before I get deployed. I was wondering if anyone knows how internet, cell reception, etc works over in Afghanistan. I'm not sure how many members here have been deployed there; I think Whorez is the only one if iirc. The Marine Corps kinda keeps us in the dark on crap like this. Surprisingly enough, we don't have much contact with anyone that's been in the fleet for more than a couple months, so asking around is almost pointless.
Any links, news articles or anything that points into the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Syc

Several of my neighbors and friends have been there, but they're Canadian, so the communication channels could very well be different. They certainly had Internet access, but I suspect it was via satellite. Fine for email and web browsing, etc. but not great for something like Allegiance.

Best of luck and keep safe.

Medical, Nuke. I failed the ishihara test over a year ago, and MAPS took my contract Recon away 2 weeks before I left for boot. They didn't bother telling me until the fiscal year started in Oct, so my recruiter snagged a logistics contract since all infantry was taken up. It turns out my contract 0321 went to some kid who went AWOL for his ship date.
There's my honest answer, Nuke. Anything else?
And thank you Sharp, definitely a good start, I'll check it out tonight.

It's times like this I wish I could give you my eyesight syc. But then I realize it keeps you out of harm's way (or at least a little more out of harm's way) so I get glad I have it instead of you and it all gets confused in my head

$#@!ing be safe.

You get Internet provided for you if you are operating from a FOB, however if your going to Nadi Ali(theres a @#(!ton of troops going over in about 2 weeks) then you will most likely be without internet for large amounts of time.

I wouldnt bother trying to use your mobile for the internet and iirc its still restricted, depending on your job, for security reasons.

My brother would call me on Skype when he was on base, via his laptop. I believed the last base he was on did have a small wifi setup.
