Ok so this isn't exactly about bringing up an asian server. More like, i want to clarify some stuff related to it and ping values.

I read the wiki article on ping related to gaming. It said that ping mostly depends on user's network type, quality of ISP, firewall and some other thing which i didn't get. The article said something about the geographical distance being a minor issue compared to the above factors. I don't get much about servers and networks and i'm no techy, but if the article is true, why do i get such a massive ping in game? Plus it varies. Shouldn't it be the same or nearly same all the time? Is there any way to reduce it so it won't affect my gameplay?

About the asian server, i'd like to know why such a thing can't be set up. I seriously don't know the cost and stuff for maintainin a server but i think it is high. Still it could be manageable right. And if a server in asia is far for american players and such, can't a server be put in a neutral location where it won't affect their pings and also won't give asians much headache either?

I'm just asking these stuff coz of the usual... I'm a noob and i'm clueless lol. Thanks.

Someone else may post a nice long technical answer, but a summarized version is:

Geographical distance matters mainly because the further apart you are physically, the more "stuff" (routers, switches, various other network paraphernalia) there is between you and the server, and the more likely that one or more of those components will be bogged down and slow your connection.

A "neutral area" between the US and Asia will be in the middle of the ocean. I'm not sure how the server hosting market is in Hawaii or the Pacific Islands.

Thanks for the info. But isn't there a direct cable between mainland USA and japan or china? (not sure if this is correct or whether data travels through cables lol) wouldn't a location like that be suitable for US, asian and australian players alike? it would create probs for EU though i gez.

that could be managed though. Its not like the EU players and aus/asian players play at the same time.
