After some trouble with my game. I decided to download the installer and install Allegiance again. The current installer is terribly out of date. I enter the game and with my 8Mbit internet connection I have to wait for a really long time to get everything on auto-update. Also my first download of the installer was going at speed of 16 KB/s but because I knew that there are different hosts I canceled and clicked on the link again and the download went at full speed as it should. 850 KB/s.

So new people who get the really slow download will just cancel and think that is as fast as it goes and go play something else and if they wait they will get the slow auto update as the installer is really out of date. People are really impatient and I wonder how many people we lose because of that.

We should keep the installer updated all the time with every artwork release.

This depends on from which mirror you're downloading.

Autoupdate or installer?

I know installer depends and I can just cancel it. Because I know there is another mirror which is faster I can get a faster download. New people do not know this.

I was talking about the installer...

madpeople agrees with all of kramari's points. madpeople was surprised when he went to download the latest installer two days ago that he was asked if he wanted to overwrite his allegsetup258.exe from 06/2010.

That's what he said ;)

Plus the auto update download might be quite the surprise, as well.

Most new online games has a token downloader which then asks them what they want (hi-def packs, microsoft redis etc) then downloads it from a server.

Maybe that'll be a better approach?

When I was writing my version of modulous in java I intended it to be able to install all the files in the default installation as a "Base Configuration" mod.

Putting all the files (optionally .wav in addition to .ogg) in the alleg install folder and writing the reg keys is all that's required to install allegiance correct?

yep.

So it shouldn't be an issue. With this method you can keep the "small download" for people who don't want hi-res, and you don't have to have a big initial download! Also you can / maybe able to take the files from auto update :P

So we leave stuff as it is?
What can I do to make the installer better? I will learn if something needs to be learned.
