hmm.. that's a little odd. Does it happen only in the training sessions? Are you ok in a regular game? (FYI, You can launch a solo game just to test.)

Have to dithered with the sound settings under the ESC menu? Try playing with those a bit if you haven't and report back.

I have dithered appropriately in the settings
and the whole program appears to be a mute

What about a regular game? (The training missions are a far less developed area of the game, so there's not much in the way of tech support for it.)

Bummer.

Hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge in this area will chime in - perhaps one of the dev team members, too. They've been know to check in from time to time. ;)

I would try reinstalling your sound drivers. If you still have the original CD, that came with the motherboard or computer, give that a shot.

If it's a pre-built computer it might be kind of obscure to find exactly what you need. I would then recommend finding the drivers online. I can't seem to find it right off the bat because that isn't a very specific audio driver you have listed. Perhaps it is just my lack of Intel knowledge.

If you need help finding drivers, try going to Start -> Run and type "dxdiag" and go into the "Sound" tabs up top. If you still can't figure it out, go to the bottom, click "Save All Information...", save it to a text file and post it here :) .

Good luck.

Wonder if he ever got the sound working ... I'm having sort of the same problem.
I do get voice overs but ONLY while flying.
No lobby sounds, no VC's either.
none of the buttons have sounds either.
Music doesn't play either.
