Try this then : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

It's the full installer. Should install any missing files.

Just an FYI, I have a brand new, freshly updated install of Win 7 on my PC and just received this error. I find it a bit odd that I have to go download anything, really, to run Alleg on what is pretty much the most up-to-date PC one can get. This could be a major turn-off to any newbies. They get that error and just give up....

Ok, but where do I extract these 'missing' files to?

Up to date PC != up to date software.

Windows 7 is not very recent, no matter how shiny it looks. It was RTMed in July. The disc ships with the DirectX runtimes from that month. Microsoft does not update files on the discs until a Service Pack is released.

Install any recent game and you'll see it updating DirectX. We just don't bundle it with Allegiance because that would double the download size.

Oooh, cool =)

So what about maybe putting that info into the installer somewhere? Cause if Windows 7 doesn't have the files necessary to install it, then nothing does. This means that anybody who hasn't updated Direct X in the past few months (probably many people) will receive this error and have to come searching for answers.

I'm not trying to be critical of you, Immz, don't take this the wrong way... I'm just looking at this from a newbie perspective. If a fresh install of the newest version of Windows available on a disc gives vague errors of missing files when Alleg is installed on it, that's maybe something worth addressing. It's just adding 1 more potential hoop for people to jump through to get in game.

edit:

Alternatively to changing the installer -- I have no idea how difficult that would be and thus am not expecting anybody to do anything -- maybe I could put that info on my new portal page somewhere? "Please have the most up-to-date Direct X files straight from 'this link' installed" Then if the person runs into errors it's their own damn fault for not following instructions.
