Well, not that we NEED new factions... But you see, the imaginary pictures of these ships just keep floating around in my head and I'd love to see them in some space-action... Some might start creating a faction idea in a "Lets give them strong hulls, but balance it out with weak shields..." way, but in this case, I had the ship designs in my head first and started thinking about their gameplay features later... But whatever, let's just finally get to the point:

So, the first faction is the "Retro-Faction" (working title). The ship designs would be based on WW2 airplanes (scouts, figs etc.) and battleships (capships).

Just to help you imagine it, "futurize" and resize accordingly the following WW2 USA aircrafts:

- Scout: Catalina
- Fighter: Mustang (Although my favourite would be GB Spitfire, but the others are USA, so whatever...)
- Interceptor: Lockheed P 38 Lightning
- Bomber: B17 Flying Fortress
- Carrier: Just about any WW2 Carrier (Enterprise, for example)
- Capships: WW2 frigattes, corvettes, destroyers, cruisers, battleships... Depending on size.
...

So, that could get you into picture. I haven't thought about anything else about this faction now, except that thay would have higher up-down turning rate than the left-righ one (reversed Rix) - it would mimic the handling of WW2 aircraft a little.

The other faction is kinda ripoff of the Khaak from X2 and following titles in the X series - in the fact that the ships and bases would be coposed of many identical tetrahedron blocks. The bigger the ship/base, the more of the blocks (with pod being one block, scout being four, etc...). And that's about it, I had no more ideas about those two. Although I guess that it wouldn't be that difficult to come up with some generic differences... Maybe I will come up with them later.

So, the question would be: Could you imagine it would be at least a little bit cool to have factions with such designs in Allegiance? Cause other than that, I know all that usually goes around "new faction suggestions" (adding a new faction is hard, takes a long time, etc. etc.)...

For the first one, will you have a Space Battleship Yamato? Because you should. It sounds a little like a potentially better (and less cheesy) version of the Phoenix idea. :D

But I really like the second idea with the identical blocks. That sounds pretty cool. :)

Well, although it would be technically possible to take a ship that really existed as a template and just make it little futuristic, I would hardly be willing to go through the trouble :-D Should it be ME who would make 3D models for that faction, I would take some more generic approach... Standart hull shape, stick some guns on it, replace turbines with rocket engines and that would be it... But I must agree, it would be interesting if the biggest capship that faction would be designed to resemble Yamato...

About Starlancer... Well, I don't remember Starlancer ships resembling WW2 that much... Also depends if you are talking about small ones or capships...

Hell that's pretty much PRECISELY what I had in mind! Didn't even know about something like this :-D The only things different from those space battleships in my ideas is that they didn't have that large front cannon and instead of one large engine and two smaller, they had three of the same size... But yeah, hell yeah :-D

it aint possible to make gun turrets like that in alleg. sure you can make turrets on it but they will be static, and the bullets will just come from one point of the ship.

Heh, I know that, similar thing was discussed many times around "stations with turrets" etc. All I proposed were capships designed to resemble WW2 cruisers etc. and "Space Battleship Yamato" is pretty good example. In Allegiance, the ships could have something that would look like cannon turrets, but they would be fixed front-firing weapons. On smaller ships with one cannon turret, each cannon on that turret would be separate weapon, on larger ships with more cannon turrets, each turret would be one weapon, that would fire more projectiles (the faction would require special weapons like "double" and "triple cannon", that would be only equippable by those ships). And small turrets would work just as on any other Alleg ship.

Here you can see a "3D sketch" I made:

Neat start, but you must space-ify it moar, says I! :D Also you shouldn't just cut it off below the water-line, imho. It will look more spaceship-ey if you keep the entire hull, not just the part that would be visible if it was floating on water, is what I mean, including the keel et. al. Might be good places to attach more spaceship-ey parts there. :) Yes. >_> I think the large flat section towards the rear is practically screaming for a giant space-ship engine. :D

(All just imho of course. :P )

^_^

And on a vaguely related note, we can't forget Starship Titanic! :D

Though that's more on the extreme end of space-ifying a traditional ship... But you can still see the inspiration. :)
