Well make sure Allegiance isn't being blocked by the firewall, I can't say I have heard of Telus Freedom/E-protect, also check your router and make sure ports 2300-2400 are not being blocked as Allegiance uses those.

If it's not the router blocking ports though it might be your antivirus which is the problem. McAffee, Norton and some others have some weird code which makes them block Allegiance, however not only does it block Allegiance even when you disable them it still blocks poor old Allegiance, the only method is the purge (uninstall) the evil antivirus and reboot to let Allegiance live. However check the router first, and if you can't uninstall the antivirus then you might be screwed.

ok, just read your post more clearly specifically the

QUOTE Problem Encountered at Step #: (read the "What Should Happen" for this step#) stops at #8 unless firewall is down; parents strictly forbid this.[/quote]

which is a bit of a pickle because you know the problem, and you know the solution, but you aren't allowed to fix it, which means once again your screwed :P Check the firewall and make sure it isn't blocking Allegiance or MS Gaming.

I can only unblock ports one by one-and Dad wants as few as possible open. (even though the router "protects against incomming threats, but not those from inside you're network")
Haven't checked the router yet... I don't think so though...

MS Gaming? I can only grant Internet access to certain .exes and open ports to all of the .exes on the list.

Maybe if you got your father to read this you might change his mind. It doesn't seem to be very reliable. Personally, I don't have any experience with it.

A router is a better firewall than any software can be, imho, but if your father can't buy into that, there's not much we can do. Too bad you can't run iptables from Ubuntu instead, but Alleg doesn't run on Linux. (forget a virtual machine)

Matt,

When you disable your software firewall you are able to connect to the lobby. This is actually a good sign. That tells us that your AV and Router are in order. (I am assuming you have two separate firewalls. The firewall built into the router and another software provided by Telus.) If you want to dork around with router settings without getting dad mad, click here and you can experiment.

Since you are using an unfamiliar software firewall, you'll have to discover how to open that range of ports without our help. Most software firewall installs must be Uninstalled in order to connect, BUT, since you are able to simply disable your firewall to gain access, it is more likely that it is simply a matter of configuration to get you online. Try using a dash between the numbers for ranges. A comma should be used to separate ranges. ie...(2300-2400,2500,2503-2509) Open for both TCP and UDP traffic.

Even with this configured properly, you might have a firewall rule overriding this one preventing you from connecting. You're going to have to experiment a little. As a last resort, Ask directions. I know, it's against our nature...but call the ISP and get some tech to walk you thru it. They sold it to you with support to back it up. Take advantage of it.

My parents pasword-protected the firewall... I cant even LOOK at the rules... much less experiment with them.

That router utility - if I make a change, it doesn't stick. I will keep trying...

The site I linked to is just a website designed to allow you to practice using the routers menus.

If you want to access the real router in your house, put this address in your web browser. http://192.168.0.1

I suggest you leave the router alone if you know for sure it works fine when the firewall is disabled. Dorking up that router is sure to tick dad off. :)

You may have to resort to drastic measures to get your pa to open up those ports. Bribery! Women have been doing this for eons because it works very well. You butter him up with extra help around the house, clean the garage, basement, wash his car....do whatever but don't let him know why you're doing it. It won't be long until his conscience gives in. ;)

Good luck

Good idea-I might do this when he gets home over the Easter holidays.

I will also try the blunt path first by just giving him my estimate on the impact on our security (less than a 00.0102% reduction in ONE layer of protection)

Thanks!

It's probably a smaller reduction in security than that in reality. It's pretty widely accepted that software Firewalls are less useful than the hardware firewall in your Router (which according to the internet blurb has "Advanced Firewall and Parental Control").

Good luck :)

Done! He accepted and is home now too! I only had to open the first 20 out of 101 and it works fine! :D
Thanks! :notworthy:
