Its still mcafee I'm afraid. Turning it off does not stop all of its features.
Unless someone has come up with a way to disable mcafee, I believe you will have to uninstall mcafee to get alleg to run correctly.
If you feel you still need anti virus software. Avira or Avast are excellent free choices which are less intrusive than mcafee, and probably better in the long run (i.e. your subsription period does not run out).

I figured as much. I don't want to uninstall seeing as I do have a free subscription haha (new laptop) but I guess I'll have to, given there doesn't seem to be a way to completely disable McAfee for the duration of my playing. Thanks for the confirmation. I'll uninstall mcafee and try out one of those AV's you listed and post back if all is well or the problem still exists!

Seriously dude thats a good decision. Mcafee, norton and stuff are not any better than the free AVs out there, and you don't have to worry about subscriptions running out etc.
I use Avira, which is fine apart from the annoying popup you get very occasionally. I've heard Avast works with alleg too. AVG is good but I've heard there may be problems with the new version + alleg.
Anyway
Good Luck - hope to see you in game some other day - I'm off to bed.

I have uninstalled McAfee and installed Avast!, but I still get the error message. I'm not sure if I have the ports opened properly, but I'll keep trying

You don't need to forward the ports, just make sure they are not blocked.
Just wondering though did you install Avast with the firewall bundle because thats probably the reason. The Avast firewall doesn't work with Allegiance either I think, i'm not too sure but you might have to uninstall Avast and reinstall without the firewall package or something, im not too sure im happy with my working AVG on XP

lemme just make sure before I take anymore time with this haha. If I reinstall with avast minus the firewall bundle, and turn on my windows firewall with alleg excepted, will alleg still work? I really don't feel comfortable playing without some sort of protection, however I will if I have no other choice

Windows Firewall works perfectly well with Allegiance once its unblocked, to be perfectly honest though you aren't going to run into any viruses that the windows firewall or your router won't catch, at least not by just playing Allegiance.

right.. your router is a better firewall anyway (unless you put the computer in its DMZ).
