Apart from the indicator that shows your forward direction, what about a secondary icon that shows up when flying backwards? It would be directly behind the forward indicator. Might be helpful when deploying mines or when strafing while moving backwards in combat.

would also be helpful when you want to turn around but not too far

The more technical term for that would be Prograde and Retrograde indicators...and a Retrograde Indicator would definatly help in doing flight maneuvers, and also it would Definatly help with bombers having to deal with newbie nans that like to go on ram fests...
