Summary of this thread:
Right now, Accel GA is in Expansion. It increases acceleration by 10%, but decreases top boosting speed for most craft by a few percent, and by 7% for interceptors. If you get Accel 2 the aggregate loss is more than 13%. This is irritating and non-intuitive. Changing the game to fix this is probably too much to ask of our coders, at least for now.

Accel GA is currently most helpful for ships that don't have boosters, like cons, scouts, and stealth fighters. It is generally believed to be a poor choice when using interceptors, which you generally will if you buy an Expansion. One option is to move the GA to another techpath. If it is moved to the garrison, it is effectively available to all techpaths.

The other possibility is to change the Accel GA into a hybrid accel/top speed GA, so that buying it does not nerf interceptors at all, or at least nerfs them less. Buying this hybrid GA would make all ships faster, notably cons and bombers. Please keep in mind that there is already a top speed GA in shipyard.

Current GAs by techpath:
Garrison/Str: 0
Shipyard: 1
Tac: 3
Sup: 6
Exp: 4 ship, 4 other

I voted for the first option because I like Exp and having a small speed perk in it would be awesome.

I voted for "don't change anything". Commanders choose who they cater for - their long distance miner whores (why they can't give them a decent, close base is baffling) - or everyone else on their team.

ints that can pounce on @#(! are more valuabvle than belter- like interceptors

Actually, I just thought of a way to do that without changing the game code, though I haven't tested it to see how well it would work. The idea is to create a, b, and c variants of each booster. Booster 1a would have 900 thrust, booster 1b would have 990 thrust, ltbooster 1c would have 545 thrust, etc. Comments? I know it would take up a number of tech tree numbers, which might hamper the inclusion of a ninth faction, I dunno.

This would increase fuel consumption, so we should consider carefully whether we also want to increase fuel efficiency.

Move it to SY where it belongs- all things considered it's really the most applicable, and as Camaro and I were working on- have it give a small top speed perk to cover the mnimum amount it cuts down top speed.

In other notes, sometimes I just like to use boosters to get my speed from 0-max quickly, then forward thrust until at cruise speed.

That's actually a pretty awesome idea. It might not even take up many tech tree numbers (1 if you're lucky).
The only downside is that the devs would need to be really careful about successors - see Vly's nonlinear upgrades concept core.
