I don't know how much of a code change this would require, but I was playing SubSpace like five minutes ago and realized how fun hockey or soccer would be if there were a core made for it and some additional Alleg coding threw in.
Basically, one man would have to hold a ball (or a flag) and try to get it to a goal. There'd be goalies, actual defensive men, the whole shebang. First to win in the time alloted or first to however many points wins.
It's a pretty broad idea, but it's something I'd love to discuss further and hopefully work on creating.

And how would this differ from the existing Capture the Flag game type?

CTF requires docking a flag in base. You have to blow someone up to get the flag. And, to be brutally honest, CTF really doesn't require any teamwork (countless times have I stolen a flag that was proxed, camped, and towered - granted it took me a couple of times to take out the towers, but after that it was easy pickins).
Hockey would require a ball being added to the code, being able to pass said ball (I'm thinking that it "launches" from ships @ 200mps just so it can make it to one end of the very small custom sector to the other, and have a bit of mass so it carries that momentum), an increased amount of teamwork, special guns that have a range of 200m but pack a punch (like a 3 shots/sec and able to kill any ship in 1 second), and some other things I have yet to think of.
tl;dr: CTF is weak compared to regular hockey. Or soccer.

Heh. Made me think of reverse CTF cuz you put the flag in your opponents base. That would be fun (not the special guns shooting thing).

I had an idea similar to this, basically you have two specially designed bases so they attach to each other (and by that I mean look attached), the players launch inside this area between the two bases and have to get the ball into the opposing teams green door, each team has a limited amount of money so you can only have some types of each ship (1 gs as goalie etc...) no weapons just ramming, all ships have shields so its impossible to kill an enemy by ramming to death, that or make the goalie impossible to kill (and the ball of course) and give weapons to all ships.
I was thinking the ball could be an ship which has to be rammed into the oppsing green door.
Code: Select all
X = Ball
O = Red Doors
{ = Green Doors
_ | = Walls
_________O________
.................
.................
{........X........}
.................
________O________
That's just a basic outline, however if there was a code change for this there could be countless maps implemented so it could fit small teams and large teams. Just an idea (not a suggestion!)

That is actually a good idea, Sharp. Have a mindless ship in the shape of a 3D pentagon thingy that's pretty large in size, small in mass, and able to be spawned at any time by "officials" ... but then I was thinking, how exactly would we get the ship to stay still? Just don't apply any type of AI to it?
And instead of having bases, I was thinking one mammoth base that looks like a drydock. It has spines that resembles one of those cages of death, you know? And there's only one way in or out of the cage, and it's a tunnel like thing (as respawn points would be outside of the big ass cage thingy, don't think we can make bases inside of bases).
As for the ships, I was thinking they'd have to be specially made. All of them would NEED to have flat noses so it's easy to ram the ball. The keeper ship would be the same size, but the accel for it would be dramatically increased on all axes. Each team would have very distinguishable colors (like red/yellow theme for one team, and green/white theme for the other team, or something like that).
Hell, if it gains popularity, there could even be a league in its own! No squads, just teams, treating it like an actual professional sport. That'd be awesome.
