I just started Allegiance and have found that the default controls are poor. I looked over the control setup offered in the newbie guide but saw that it utilizes the numpad. There is no numpad on my laptop. Could anyone recommend a configuration that does not use the numpad? Thanks for reading.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he read the keyboard part already.
You could buy an USB numpad /mrgreen.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="mrgreen.gif" />
My laptop configuration is: WASDRF is all directon strafing, End is switching to mouse control. And then the other stuff is rather similar to the numpad keyboard configs. You can place the important targetting buttons to your liking.

Just keep working with it until you find whats comfortable for you. I would also suggest that you make your changes gradually. This way you have a chance to get used to a few changes and feel good about them, then make a couple more. You paying with mouse, joystick, or what? Gaming pads are reasonably priced to coincide with whatever you are using. I also play on a laptop, and very little of my mapping is default.

you could come up with your own, you want one which gives you access to all the side thrusters easily, target buttons you want and find useful, and cargo managment buttons (not to mention stuff like cloak, ripcord, ap etc)
you've already found the accademy one, i've posted mine

I fly on a laptop too.
There are a lot of keys that don't pull their own weight: F2, F9-F12, W, T, X, Z, I, -, +. There are even some keys with no default mapping at all: J, U, O, semicolon, apostrophe, comma, period, forward slash. Y and N are only useful for voting to #resign #draw, and #mutiny proposals. Several keys on the number row have duplicates elsewhere on the keyboard (6 = A, 8 = TAB, 9 = K, 0 = D). And then there's the space key -- a bigass key that never gets used; you should never be dogfigting from the keyboard, so it makes no sense to map a key to fire missles / guns.
OTOH there are important keys on the numpad: sidethrust, backthrust, switch control to mouse, and zoom in/out. These are the first things you should remap. I have these moved to WASD, V, G, and [ and ] respectively.
You should also probably also remove the duplicate keys. It's much easier for me to press 5 and 7 to unload missles and shields rather than ctrl+5, ctrl+7. (I've also moved 8 and 9 to swap thrusters and cloak, respectively). 0 (mines) got moved down to the spacebar; 0, -, =, and backspace are my thrust 0, 33, 66, and 100% keys now.
I also moved a couple of keys closer to my sidethrusting keys (target center, thrust 100%, match speed, and chaff are on Q, Z, X, C now). Together with the default target E = enemy, these are keys I often use while dogfighting or nanning (although sometimes I accidently hit the wrong key when trying to sidethrust up, so I lose targetting and end up getting owned in a dogfight).

I'm confused... I use something pretty close to the Academy config, and I only use 0 on the numpad (for switching between mouse-look and cursor-control). Just because a key is mapped doesn't mean you have to hit it -- most of the stuff on the numpad is duplicate keys.
Incidentally for other noobs & voobs who had a hard time finding the control section in the academy, it's
http://www.allegacademy.org/cadet/cadet1/remapcontrols.shtml.
I've had this setup for so long I don't even know what the keys are, I just know where they are instinctively.

Making your own key configuration is a steady process.
Put, like everyone said, the thrusters to wasd (w for forward thrust, s for backward. you can toggle speed with shift+w and shift+s for example), get your booster, target enemy and target friendly, target center and mousecontrol on/off close to them.
I think that are the basics. All the rest will come when you fly. ~100 times "$#@! wheres that key, I need it often, I better put it ..." will await you, but in the end you have your own config you know and love and that supports your playstyle.
Oh and get your keys on the mouse mapped. All of them. I use uberOptions for my Logitech mouse for this. It lets me remap all the keys, especially the ones alleg doesn't recognized straight away, to keyconfigs that alleg is able to capture, for every program seperate, so you don't lose your mousewheel for example in all other applications, it will just be remapped when running alleg.
You may also install madpeoples mod, found
here in his Blog - it also activates many, else useless, mousebuttons for you
If you fly with joystick ignore my last paragraph.

Hi RP,
The default configuration sucks for sure! I play Alleg on a laptop and hence have no numpad. I don't like spending money and hence will not buy one. I use WASD for my thrusters, UP/LEFT/DOWN/RIGHT respectively. I use Q and E for roll left and roll right. H and N for forward thrust and reverse thrust. Spacebar is for countermeasures, tab for thrust. Then assign some essential targeting buttons to T, 5, 6, Y as they are easy to hit when your hand is near the WASD area. Other than that try to just figure out what works. Don't forget it's really important to have easy access to your sidethrusters and roll buttons!
