Anyone know if your cargo counts toward ram damage?

Yes.

in other words, load up on Mass Drivers (1000 per), then aleph res 3 if none of those (70 per), if you have to, use aleph res 2 (60), followed by Aleph Res 1 (50) or Large Shields (50) as per whatever is available for maximum effect laugh.gif

of course LS cost $0 while Aleph res costs 1000-3000

Although I know it "should" affect damage, I'm not sure mass does in alleg. It certainly affects how far you ram something. When the collision damage bug was fixed, someone posted the calculation code, and I vaguely remember being surprised by the lack of mass. It was all hitpoints and velocities, IIRC. It kind of makes sense as being hit by 1000kg of jello probably wouldn't hurt your ship as much as being hit by 1000kg of steel.

I can't believe I'm being so pedantic here, but 1000kg is the mass.

1000kg of jello has the same mass as 1000kg of steel (1000kg!) The effect on your ship would be down to the density and other physical properties of the object striking you. So, umm, yeah the steel being a dense solid would have greater impact upon your ship that the gel (or suspension? it's a long time since I did any chemistry) jello but the masses are the same. 1000kg of jello would have higher volume than the steel though so you would need a bigger ship to do your ramming in.

The jello would goo up your external intakes and make seeing where you are going harder, plus if you got the munchies on the way to or from the ram ...

Uhm South I think he knows that, hence why he says Steel would probably hurt more. Although I doubt you would get rammed instead you get immersed.

We so need a core which has a jelly gun!!

Jello would take no dmg, therefore jello > steel.

Um... Yeah southpaw, I was trying to rationalize why the MS game dev's wouldn't include a mass term in ram damage calculations, because 2 objects with the same mass but different compositions could have entirely different collisional properties.

However HitPoints is a more holistic factor that could embody not only mass but also composition and chemistry, which is probably why the dev's included that in the calculation instead.
