Well, now we are (6)...

The learning is really starting here, although I'm finding that I'm wary of joining @CDT (time commitemnt, oyy)... Maybe that's a mistake too... Is CDT forum based now? or is it all in game? Anyone?

Anyhow, a few games past, looks like I squicked the commander as I was too busy trying to load out my scout to realise that actually, I should be flying an SR scout. Sorry Al, I'll try not to make it happen again.

But yeah, I'm finding myself making a few mistakes and I think about them just a little too late to stop myself. Perhaps other newbies can learn from them faster than I can /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

1) Don't be afraid to ask the commander for money... But ask once and then wait... if there is no reply, assume it's a no, and fly something else. It could be (As I found out) even if you aren't confident in an expensive ship, the commander has a use for you to have it. Don't expect him to need a bomber pilot though unless he starts asking.

2) You're in an interceptor, fighter or stealth fighter, there is a lone scout just inside range, and he's running away... Think before giving chase... Especially if you're a long way from home. Most scouts carry mines... and they will laugh as you smash straight into them... (I keep falling for this, and I want to headbutt the keyboard every time, as I realise just too late to stop)

3) Scouts work well alone... Stealth fighters work well alone... Everything else works best in a team... Try to keep up with the pack.... WAIT for the pack if you need to.

4) There comes a time when you will be confused with orders, two sets of seemingly contradictory orders come in, you have to choose which to obey. Do NOT try to obey every order as it comes up, pick one you think you can do, stick to it. If something more important comes up, switch to that. Try to use your judgement, and try to listen to orders.

5) If you're not sure where you should be, tell your commander what you're doing and ask if you should be elsewhere. It -might- annoy your CO that you don't know where you should be... It -will- annoy him more if he really NEEDS you somewhere, and you're not going. I've been recently told that Page up and down will scroll the chat box, that'll help you read messages you missed.

6) some activities -require- the whole team... Frequently, bombing runs, and bombing defence... When people start shouting that they need repairs, a bombing run is most likely about to start. If it isn't already underway, try to get into a scout, pick up a nanite repair system and try to keep the bomber and your wingmates in good health.

7) Be aware of your surroundings... If an enemy can see you, they can see where you're going... Be very careful you don't give away the position of your team mates if they're trying to stay hidden.

8) Go through alephs SLOOOOWLY if you think there might be mines on the other side. The faster you go, the more damage you take from a minefield.

9) If you're in a fight you can't win, don't try. In fact, try not to get into a fight you can't win. If you can run away, run away, if you can ripcord out, do so. If you can't do either, consider trying to fly defensively... Lead the opponent on a wild goose chase. Sometimes the best thing you can do is to make the enemy waste as much ammunition and time of better pilots on you as possible. Who knows? Perhaps a bomb run will succeed elsewhere, because pilots who should have been defending were too busy putting holes in you. But don't just fly in and attack on the slim hope you might win... Until you're a better dogfighter, chances are you won't.

10) Floating home slowly is the worst thing you can do... If there are enemies all around, sometimes you're in luck... Kill yourself rather than spend five minutes in a pod, crawling to the nearest base. If you were attacking a constructor... Ram it! you might just spin it out and buy your team time to blow it up, you may even be able to get back fast enough to do it again. Similarly, ram enemy bombers in your pod, if you can catch them... There's a chance that you'll spin him out too, and in the middle of a bombing run, he may miss. It's also faster than docking in a crisis. Always look for a faster way home.

11) Think in terms of the big picture, as I said earlier, if you don't know where you should be, find out! Dock, take stock and gather your senses, hit F3 to see what's going on in the game, then hit F8 to pick the closest station to the action.

12) Similarly, docking and transferring to a new station can be very much faster than trying to fly there, even if you look silly undocking, realising you need to be elsewhere and redocking. Travel quickly, unless stealth is needed. Use your fuel, that's what it's there for.

13) Don't take it personally... Unless you've made a mistake, you'll rarely find -ANYTHING- is addessed to you personally. (except people offering to pick you up sometimes or asking you for a pickup) For the most part, this means you'll be figuring out which orders apply to you. The better you do this, the more a commander will like you.

Well, that's all I can think of right now... I've tried to go for points not already covered in the cadet training manual...

I hope I've not written anything terribly wrong here!

I leave this advice to the tender mercies of people more experienced than myself.

See you all in space sometime!

It's always been forum-based, AFAIK. /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

A good list you wrote there... some folks will take exception to some of your broader statements (and nothing that @CDT can't cure /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />) but altogether a fair summation.

Aww man don't go telling them that!! I love getting prox kills galore.

Your number 9 is probably the most important one though. So many newbies just yell "never surrender!!!" and take on anyone, and die, it's kinda pathetic after a while /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> You've picked up an awful lot of important stuff already, well done!

Cadet I is forum or self-taught, all the material is publically available. Cadet II is forum based.

Welcome to the game, glad you enjoy it. Cadet is very easy commitment-wise, just enough time to read and practice a little (i.e. play with your new knowledge). I'm sure there's an official summary somewhere /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> You sound like a fast learner, you'd probably get a lot out of it.

Oh, the network is still coming up. I will type something else while I wait. Even as a would-be prox whore for six months now, I still often fall for the lure of a lone scout.

See you in game!

Excellent list. You learn fast. It does take a while to learn the flow of the game and figure out what is the best thing you can do to help the team win at any given moment.

A couple other tips I can think of:
Prox takes 4 seconds to activate. If your speed, multipled by 4, is less than the distance to the scout ... full speed ahead. If you're the scout ... do the math in reverse to determine the right moment to drop.Your chances of a successful proxkill are inversely proportional to the enemy fighter's rank. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Boosting fighters are often still slower than a scout at top speed. You have to be a fast faction like Dreg or Belters, or they have to be slow like TF, or you have to have Boost 2.Take care when following a scout through an aleph, he probably dropped prox on the other side.If the scout you are following is named 'Defiance', then that he's a she, and it's DEFINITELY proxed.First law of bombers: If you're eyed, the aleph is proxed.Second law of bombers: That harmless enemy scout flying pathetically in front of you is about to drop prox and own your entire bomb run if you don't slow down.Flying stealth fighters well takes a lot practice. And it's not really covered until CDT II. If you can't wait that long to be a stone cold miner killer, ask around in game, a good chance someone will help you out.

Very good farrel. All in a few games worth and you have great conclusions. I wonder what insight you will produce after a little more XP.
