ASGS Update : Transition to .NET 2.0

Fellow Allegites,

As you may or may not know, the .NET 3.5 runtimes released recently by Microsoft are not compatible with ASGS, our authentication program. A new version of ASGS, updated to run on .NET 2.0 and compatible to .NET 3.5 has been in development for some time - and now it's ready for release.

In anticipation of its imminent deployment, we request the community to download and install .NET 2.0 runtimes on your computers.

If you currently use an nVidia or ATI graphics card and have a recent driver for it installed and running, chances are, you already have .NET 2.0. If you don't, you can follow the instructions below to get it.

You can download it from Microsoft's Download Center.

DO NOT install .NET 2.0 SP1.

IF YOU DO NOT INSTALL .NET 2.0 RUNTIMES, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY ALLEGIANCE ONCE THE UPDATE GOES LIVE!

If you have any problems, please post in the Helpline with the template filled out and we'll do our best to help you out.

-The Tech Support Team.

Nothing is cast in stone, but it could be in as little as a week. The current version of ASGS works just fine with .NET 2.0 so there's no reason not to get 2.0 now.

It should be compatible with 3.0 yes?

"It", being ASGS? Yes, that is my understanding. I'm no expert, but you should have 2.0 (even if you have 3.0) as they are complimentary, rather than "upgrades" in the traditional sense.

It will be compatable with 3.5, but you will need 2.0 to play.

So the releases aren't incremental software? /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":o" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />

Gotta love Micro$oft

Yep.. you got it. It's not unlike all the various updates to DirectX that all have the same version number.

Any chance of an early test release of this? I'm a .NET developer by trade, and a lot of the work I'm doing right now is on v3.5 -- it's killing me to uninstall and reinstall 2.0 SP1, 3.0 SP1, and 3.5 every time I want to play Allegiance. Not to mention every time I forget to reinstall at 3 am, just to be bewildered the next morning when I go to launch VS2008 and it freaks out on me.

P.S. I'm totally ok with alpha testing it

It's actually fully developed and ready for release. We're just waiting for people to get the framework installed before pushing it.

Testing it, well - the server and client will both go live at the same time, so there will be no beta. ASGS is tested very limitedly for security reasons. But we appreciate your offer for help /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
