A great man once told me: "To command well, you need to fly well. This why you can understand the limitations of your pilots, and what needs to be given to them to achieve your goals.
Also, whore tech is bad if you dont need it. Your team will just dick around and whore."
I dont see a commander that is bad at flying doing as well as a commander that does.
Oo ya, thats not word for word. I doubt he said dick around : P

This great man was wrong... You don't need to fly well to command well (Bombarta, DrS and Nak anyone?)Malicious Wraith wrote:QUOTE (Malicious Wraith @ Nov 29 2007, 09:30 AM) A great man once told me: "To command well, you need to fly well. You don't really need to know anything about dogfighting as a matter of fact, except when it pertains to defending a base/miners yourself. The limitations of your pilots is something you need to be aware of, but more in a general sense of resource management (Would be nice to think of it as resource allocation, but that's wishful thinking in a pickup game) as in don't expect one person to defeat two with equal tech, the dynamics of dogfighting are really unimportant to a commander, since really the only influence he has over it is directly linked to technology research which only really affects the fixed aspects of a dogfight and not the dynamics (except for speed and agi GA's, which since they're linear isn't that big of a deal)
As for nans... well see sig. I still think having nans is cheating.

Im sorry, when I said well, I mean "Know the ins and outs" not actually have skill in flying.Ahaneon wrote:QUOTE (Ahaneon @ Nov 29 2007, 12:32 PM) This great man was wrong... You don't need to fly well to command well (Bombarta, DrS and Nak anyone?)

I do however disagree that a good commander does not need to know the dynamics of dog fighting. He needs to understand how to win the game with what he has, and inform his team on the best strategy on the fly. He needs to know when to send bombers through alephs with different sizes of camps, different defenders defending the base and the bomber. He needs to micromanage as well as macromanage.
You could however argue that it is up to the players to know how to play, however I will counter that a commander with that knowledge can make a bad team perform better then it otherwise could, making him a better commander.
And no, the great man is not wrong /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />, if anything was wrong in that statement it was due to the real greatness being lost in translation.
