OK guys/gals, I know this is going to sound a bit lame to you all but I have been so focused on getting my laboratory off the ground that I'm am kinda clueless about R4 concerning the Hi-res stuff. How does this all work now? Does the hi res stuff like asteroids work? Do they need to be converted to... what the hell was it.... a PNG or something? I am way behind and need to be brought up to speed. Time is still a precious commodity with me and that is why I am posting this instead of reading thru like ten months of R4 threads.
Ya'll's help in this matter is very much appreciated.

As far as I know, all the mods you have on your website work, except for the CortUI mods. The hi-res environments seem to lag the game if you set the textures at 2048 but I believe that's just because of my old computer.
Edit: Madpeople's UI works with R4 but it conflicts with some new features, like the 3 status lines and you won't see them if you install madpUI.

Why do we need compressed high res textures?!
PNG high res textures are not need: They just decrease the space on harddisk and increase the needed CPU power to uncompress PNGs... /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
Same with OGG files.

The changes to how images are handled in R4 really just enables you to make the installers smaller by converting the bmp.mdl's to a text .mdl and a .png image.

you can directly edit the .png with the .png and text mdl combo though - no need to auto convert
@pkk, what if CPU can decode a pixel in less time than HDD can read a pixel, which loads faster? compressed png or uncompressed bmp?
as for my UI, it probably only needs 1 line or so changed for full computability, but i haven't really got many plans to fix it yet, cort is including it (with the change) as an option in his next cort ui installer. maybe if i had an easy dl (e.g. the http AU dl) of the R4 dialog.mdl i might have a stab at fixing it, but i haven't logged in in over a month so haven't AU'd it, and i don't have many plans for logging in any time soon.

This is true, as well as decreasing install time.
Really, there are only pros to switching to the text based bmp.mdl format with .pngs.

Unless the bmp is under a kilobyte or so, depending on the sector size of your disk:)

next question is... Some of my installers place the files in the Textures folder. Is that still used, right?
