I think giving users the option to spectate a game (instead of joining and just sitting in base) would give squadleaders a good way to look for possible talent as well as newbies a chance to see how 'the big guys' play. If servers can support up to 200 players (which never happens, as far as I've seen) then a few spectators should be such a problem.

Also, next to the directionlock, maybe there could be something like an autopilot-lock (for example flying to a base in another sector) so that you'd be able to do other things while the ship continues to fly that way

There's a ship designed just for observing, if you grab ICE or TEK and look at the tech tree under garrison (assuming your looking in DN) there's a ship called the Observer. Never see it researched, though. Probably because it's basically just a really fast eject pod that costs $1 every five minutes due to the O2 supply. I've not had a chance to fly it, but seems better for screenshots rather than observing the game itself, which you can do in station with F3.

In Beta there was an observer mode where a Dev could ride as an observer ON a ship. I am not sure if the code is still there or not. Only one of the Dev team could do this.

Not sure if this could be re-implemented or not. Do we really need this? Cadets are allowed to fly in almost all squad games now. So I don't see a need. Potential recruits for a squad have been allowed to fly with them for a squad match on occasion, so that precident has been set too.

could be interesting to see what someone else sees.

the old method needs cheat mode on though right?
