QUOTE New's and how to help completing the files for hires can be found here in this post
This is a quote from Zapper's pinned topic: "Hirez files - Download and List of files in high resolution." It is the third sentence, right at the top. The link in that sentence is dead. I'm interested in helping out.

I'd also be interested; I'm wondering what skills are required to help out, since I have some experience with textures, but not tons.

Send zapper a pm. He's got resamples of the textures using a fancy photoshop plugin as a base to work from, although they strictly aren't necessary (and in some rare cases worse). You can do quite a bit just editing from scratch with the original textures. The artwork repository already has all the original 256 artwork (plus some extras) already in bmp form to save you some conversion time.

In short:
-Anything in that other thread you mentioned that doesn't have a name by it is up for grabs.
-Make the textures 2048x2048 if you can.

If u can aknowlegde the general requirements u should have no problem with this..
if u only got a few then u may need to add more time to the task.
I have no PM in my box...

I'm abit hammered at the moment.. so bear with me if i dont reply with the speed of sober human behaviour

QUOTE I was having a look at the intial post for the hi-res project. Are you guys at present simply enlarging the original textures, or are you finding source material and recreating them from scratch?
Depends!
I have resized the org. tex with a plugin and are recreating decals and smoothing surface, some details are smudged beyond recognition and needs total restoration, but 80% of all the textures came out ok. U have to see for yourself /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> A rule of thumb: Do a good job and Y_P will love you(its ok if he ignores you)
So yes, some is easy and some is "handmade".

QUOTE I assume that the "Test ingame on a server" means getting a local server up so you can connect two clients to it and see if the textures work properly.
1) Check your texture for technical detail/error's in MDL viewer. Does it work, any error's. etc.
2) If your lucky there is a server with the faction playing. Go look at the final product. I usually only use the MDL viewer.
3) Local server is not available for R3(i use an old Beta server + client to check ingame if needed)

QUOTE "Converting the textures for test" involves taking the new bmp and converting it to bmp.mdl? Are you using mdlfx for that?
NO. mdlfx is not good(u can use it but.. we dont).
Use the MDLC, its easy to use, fast and its solid, grab it from... somewhere!! Y_P or MadP post, use the 16bit version, don't convert to 24 or 32bit U can do that later, when its all done and u get the hang of it.
When u work u find that its easy to just use the Master.bat when u have converted the bmp ones, after that u dont need to use the GUI.
The KB contain an simple instruction on how to use The MDLC and there is also a DL in the KB.
http://www.freeallegiance.org/knowledgebase/entry/15/55/
hmm... The MDLC viewer is not there... ill make Y_P drop a link to a host, he prolly got it somewhere..*notch Y_P*

QUOTE "Common knowledge of graphics programs". I'm a bit cheap, so all I really have available at the moment is GIMP. Are most guys using Photoshop, or what?
Some do Some don't, i got my PS when i was a student. Use what u like..

QUOTE I guess all that is not spoken for at this point is Rix. Are the bases a bit easier than the ships? If one is easier than the other I suppose I could start fiddling around, after I get a few answers to better understand what is happening. smile.gif
Yes and No, The bases have more details cramped on the same area in a way they are easier cause u can "cheat" a lot. Ships have more destinct detail's on the same area.
Start with the bases(its mandatory and the best thing) then u get the sense on where u want to go with your work.

So, in general, you are taking the enlarged textures and looking at them, and if there are bits that look terribly smudged, you are recreating them. If things look ok, then you leave them as is.
