So I got Windows Vista and installed my favorite game, Allegiance. But anytime I try to join the game it says failed to connect after a long delay. I've set the compatibility to XP SP2 and it is running as administrator...Any ideas?

Did you add Allegiance to the firewall's exceptions list? I don't have Vista (yet) and as such, don't know exactly what mechanisms it has to make the user tear his hair out.

Try turning uPNP on in your router.
If it's on, try turning it off.

Hrm...I have a Cisco 851w router (provided by my work)...Any ideas how to turn on uPNP on that? Or, alternatively, what that actually does?

So far as we're concerned it allows applications (ie Allegiance) to tell your router what ports they need to operate.
I doubt Cisco will have it implemented on their routers.
With the release of R3 the toggling uPNP "fix" should no longer have any effect.
As ImmZ said above it's being blocked by a firewall either the windows vista one. Or the one on the Cisco router.
Or even more likely, both.

The Firewall feature on my Windows Vista is disabled. As far as the Cisco Router goes, it's pretty open. There's no specific firewalling going on, just basic NAT. Do you have anything more specific I can look at? What firewall features would block it?

From what I read
here, it looks like there is a bunch of options in the router that will beef up security a lot. It could be that one of these options are blocking Allegiance. I can only suggest experimenting around with these settings as I, personally, have no experience with Cisco routers.
Edit : One thing you'll definitely want to turn
off is SPI. It'll lag down your connection a lot.

Update : Do you use ZoneAlarm? If yes, try running it after uninstalling ZA.

Why install a 3rd party firewall, which doesn't work with vista?!

I'm sorry that I don't know what programs work with Vista. It has something to do with the fact that I don't have Vista.
