Hey, guys. I just got into allegiance. (as is evident from my callsign rank) and I went through the whole academy and training but when i logged in i got one of those annoying "failed to connect to lobby" messages. I'm at a boarding school right now so someone else manages the router. I did a port security scan and all the ports from 1 to 5000 are closed. Is there any way short of taking the system admin's daughter hostage that i could get these ports open so i can log on?

Nope, unless someone give you access to a VPN (virtual private network) and forwards you the necessary ports. If that does not happen, wait for the release of the R3 Allegiance client, that solves all our router problems.

><

We just tried the VPN... no dice. The admin blocked the required ports.

It should work, outgoing connections dont pose a problem. I hooked up Grendelwolf from his college network to my home network and forwarded the ports to his internal VPN ports. He was able to play just fine (with some added lag).
Is he unable to connect to your vpn or to Allegiance? Check the router port forwards on your side.

well, if i can't figure something out or if the system admin doesn't die in a tragic smelting accident how long will i be waiting for the R3 client update?

Actual release of R3 hasn't been announced yet. FWIW, the last 3 weeks of testing has been using a stable client (ie no new additional changes). If that's any indication, it should be real soon. Of course, you can always join up on the beta server on Wednesdays when testing is conducted.

Have you tried the beta? The servers are up and you can log in, but no one is usually there except on Wednesdays. But at least you can confirm that R3 works for you. /mrgreen.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="mrgreen.gif" />

So i was looking through the installation instructions and such for the R3 Beta after reinstalling and running it thrice. yes, thrice. and i came across a bullet in the changes section of the post that read "Entire codebase ported to Visual C++ 2005 (VC8). " Does this mean i have to build the sourcecode in C++? (I feel like such a noob. /unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> )

Nah, the source change doesnt concern you /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

People play the game all over the world, but the US East coast has most of the players. 8PM-12AM EST is usually the busiest for us, but you can find players on at any time of the day.
