I played this game when it first came out on my 56k modem. Now i'm out on my own with broadband and was looking for a great way to kill time until Supreme Commander and Spore come out next year. I had forgotten all about this game until I saw it on Home of the Underdogs.
Few questions, then i'll be out of your guys' hair.
1. How reliable is Allegiance as a game? Is there usually a few games going, or do I have to log on at certain times to find anyone playing?
2. I see there are some mods. What does everyone mostly play? The base game? Or is there a really popular mod that the majority of people play on (ala Desert Combat in BF1942).
3. What is the average maturity level in a game? I remember one of the reasons I got turned off of Allegiance was all the 13 year old wankers acting like this was Counter Strike.

1. There is always a game going on these days at all hours. Sometimes you'll see two smaller games if people are running away from a childish commander. Either way: log in any time to play.
2. The most-played mod is Dark Nebulae. Just log in and play - it's available from the default install/autoupdate.
3. Average maturity? From my experience, it's less mature during the North America evenings compared with other timezones. Like with any community you have people who act like 13yo wankers, or who act like mature adults. Don't let a few bad apples ruin your fun.

Is the Dark Nebula mod more popular than the vanilla game?

Expansion:
1. American Prime Time: Usually 30-50 players online at once. Much larger turnout when special events or squad games are one.
Off-Peak (Euro Time): Around 15-25 on the weekend, ~10 weekdays.
2. Different cores are balanced differently, for example, PookCore 2 is closest to the original 1.25 MS Patch before they abandoned the game and Dark Nebulae is all about emphasising the uniqueness of each faction. DN is the most popular for regular games, but most of the cores are used for squad games. There is also a Star Wars core if that's your thing.
3. Well, there's a problem in this game called 'stacking', or occasionally by other people 'XTacking' which means one team is much more skilled/deadly than the other team, leading to fast and vicious or long and drawn-out (where the stacked side 'whores' the opponent until they get bored or the enemy team resigns) games. This usually derives from commander imbalance, however, and is not much of a problem thanks to the abudance of good commanders during prime-time. If you're feeling a little rusty you should join the team with the least amount of numbers (denoted by a (#) next to their callsign).
I think that's correct, anyway. /blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

Yes it is.
The vanillia game is probably now best described as the Pook Core II core, although A+ also is in that general vicinity.
I'd probably rank the activity for the top 3 cores as dn eor pc2, mind you now with the star wars core getting active updates that could take #2 or #3 spot, and of course there's other good cores like RPS.

Thanks for the awesome replies, guys /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
I'm gonna go check out info on the Dark Nebula mod. Hopefully it just expanded the good (research paths, etc) without taking away the classic fun.

Yes, DN is mostly like old Allegiance, with some stuff rebalanced and a few new techs added in (ie, a few new missiles, revamped shipyard, useful carriers).

Since you're a returning player, you may want to see what has changed from the sourcecode. There's a writeup on "
What Is FAZ" on the
knowledgebase.
