To me it read like he wanted to speculate, rather than wanting spoilers.

IMHO thats just RUDE!!!
If you look at Cersei's reaction, you will notice that she wasn't quite happy with the rash decision either. When I first read the book, I re-read the passage to find out if I misunderstood something (the last hope of a non-native speaker...).

even given the fact that i've read the books and know what's up, saying "jaime's going to be around for awhile" isn't really a spoiler! it's logical to figure that holding him as a prisoner and keeping him alive is quite beneficial when he is the eldest son of the house you're at war with!

One could have said a similar thing about Ned Stark...

joffrey proved himself to be a moron way before that, though

robb and catelyn have not, though (although this is debatable in cat's case considering the debacle with tyrion)

there's also the fact that it was established very early on that ned was a guy that was very much out of his element. From the very beginning he was painted as this stand-up, honorable guy that was a great soldier, brought in to support Robert in a very political element, which is something Ned showed that he was not very good at. The writing for Ned's downfall was on the wall for quite some time, I'm afraid!

I wouldn't define it as a downfall - He acted as a necessary catalyst.
