There are a number of ubuntu fans here. All of whom would love to see the game playable on ubuntu (or any linux variant). There are a number of threads about it on the forums.

As far as ASGS is concerned, it has been stated by the Admins that if a working version of Alleg can be made to run in linux (either under wine or natively) they would certainly look into changing/reworking the ASGS system to accommodate the happy event.

(essentially: get it to work first, then we'll worry about making it secure)

Yesterday we've tested R4 runs fine over an Hapachi network, so lack of ASGS or lack of a lobby server is not really a problem. :)

For the reasons discussed ad infinitum, the reason that Allegiance can't run under WINE or something similar is because we use ASGS to authenticate players. ASGS requires access to hardware that WINE and the like do not provide. For historical reasons, the relatively strict authentication has been required to prevent certain individuals from gaining access. Thanks to BlackViper (aka BV) the community rules and bans are actively enforced. (Mastametz keeps trying to get around his ban and show he is "ok" but he keeps getting found out or something.)

Yeah, if you want to get something organized to develop a Linux version, Eragon, more power to you, but don't be making a common mistake.

Badp wrote:QUOTE (Badp @ Nov 28 2008, 01:50 PM) That said, somebody HAS reported the ASGS client working under WINE, but we haven't been able to replicate this.
1. I think it was VMWare.
2. It's not whether or not we can get ASGS to work on an 'emulator', it's that we don't want it to (yet).
3. Allegiance on Linux (not just *buntu) would be great. I support this 100%, and I know the Community does, too.

EDIT:
Just fixed some grammar . . . .

Glad to hear it. Welcome. I'm starting to play again too after a long period of time participating in multiple distractive activities.
