I'm not aware of any way for the server to know the client's timezone from the HTTP headers, so even if you switched up to ajax you'll still be making two requests to the server. One to load the page, the next to load the graph passing in the timezone. Even if you background load it, the number of hits to your server are still the same.

Long story short, your current solution is just fine.

If you are interested in seeing this with a longer historical perspective, I started tracking it several years ago: http://allegiance.fragfest.net/stats/. Both the number of "active accounts" and the number of "online players." There is one year worth of data available at all times.

This is slowly being sucked into the depths of the forum. Is it possible to post the link to the graph permanently on the front page? Lets not waste the work that is already done.

yea i guess... of course you could get twitter and be notified whenever a lot of people are on... rather than just look at past history and come up with some future projections...

I currently get a 404 for this page in both IE and Chrome.
