You know minus the stuff about Mom, that statement sounds like something out of the 40k universe.

My MOS was 4321 (Print Journalist). I graduated with Platoon 3065 at San Diego in October 1984. My drill instructors were Staff Sgt. Baez, Sgt. McMillen and Sgt. Lara.
Here's wishing you all the best with your time in the Marine Corps. If I had it all to do over again, I would enlist in a heartbeat. Enlisting in the Marine Corps was the best decision I have ever made in my life.

You are using a Force Recon patch before you even get to MCRD, much less before you pass the Basic Reconnaissance Course? I know its just an avatar, but jeez dude, that is ballsy.Sycrus wrote:QUOTE (Sycrus @ Jun 21 2010, 04:37 PM) I'm technically going in as 0321 Reconnaissance, but after 2 years or initial signing I'm heading to Air Wing 6531 Ordinance. IF I can make 8541 (I guess it's 0317 now), then that for as long as I live or until I get out.

Ive got a friend from college who was in the US Marines for Gulf War I and before that insurgents Shining Path (

He and I were thick as thieves through out school and for years after it. He always used the capital M version of Marine too in his speech and waxed fondly on his time serving his country and lamenting he ever left. Well life happened and we drifted apart over the years until we lost track of each other.
So I decide to get in touch with him again, and google him. Up pops up his name in newspaper articles all over the place. In the almost five years we lost touch he: Quit his six figure salary middle management job, with one of the largest corporations in the world, to re-enlist, in his 30s, as an enlisted man, because "going to officer school would take to long".
He promptly stomped his feet to get sent to Iraqi, to the worst of the worst neighborhoods, pre-surge, where there where pitched battles almost fifty percent of the patrols, in the NON up armored humvees, to do snatch and grabs based on shakey intel work. Remember when they were begging for silly string to see booby trap wires? He figures his crew found over a hundred IEDs by themselves fwiw.
WTF would make someone do something like that? He reply was, "Im a Marine and I just couldn't stand it anymore to seeing those young Marines being put into harms way while someone like me had the experience to help them. "

I dunno, I keep small reminder of this crap to keep me motivated. It sure as hell works half the time. I agree though.
Edit: I'm GOING to make Recon, I've already been through so much trouble getting this MOS before MCRD, not gonna let it go to waste.

FYI thats what my friend is Force Recon and did a round of behind the lines evacuation of command structure brains from their skulls in Desert Storm. They want him to go to Afghanistan... but he has two kids now with the oldest under three.Sycrus wrote:QUOTE (Sycrus @ Jun 22 2010, 12:37 PM) It's got me pumped![]()

edit: @#(! forgot the bit about the quote... like I told Wurfie, wait until you earn it, makes the goal that much sweeter when you reach it and also shows that much more respect for the thing you want to obtain. *shrug* Just my take is all.

I remember when Gulf I broke out, I was still on inactive reserves. I thought for sure I would be recalled, as two friends of mine had been. I also talked to a recruiter at one point about re-enlisting. Unfortunately, he told me I couldn't go back in as a corporal. I didn't like that idea, so I stayed put and let real life happen. I now am happily married and have kids aged 21, 17, 16 and 2.

Although I still wish to remain squad less for the time being, I just want to say that the way in which I quit was not very appropriate, and Java and the rest of BS are nice respectful people, so Java you have my apologies for behaving as I did. Best of luck in future allegiance endeavors!
On a side note I don't think I've ever started a thread that has grown so large, though the content has shifted (more positively) to a very different theme. Which I have found entertaining.
Happy Flying!
