We need to ecourage everyone that is new to join team speak.
This is what the new player message should read in ASGS every time they log on.
IF you want us to help you , you must first help your self. Download team speak @ www.teamspeak.com. Install it and log on to.. ts.dras.us. Join the main chat and ask questions. People are willing to help but you have to take this simple step.
I bet if we did this one simple thing... more folks would stay.
I tried to envision a new players experince must be like in a Vet game. It simply can not be pretty.
I personally do not see how it could be conducive to encouraging continued participation.
If we could keep them longer most people do get better with time. Except me , me and then you get worse...
If you put new folks on a new server with no guidance the fear has always been all you get are @#(!ty newbies with bad habits. I see some merit in that argument but I see a greater need in trying to keep them around long enough to learn some basic flight controls and base switching etc.
I like the idea of @Help hosting new player games. If we had two @ help Commanders and restricted all new folks under 5 to those servers during certain hours. I would think that could work. It would take some coordination though.
Basically if two @helps got up a new player game , then the main could lock out the new folks to force them to the new player game. Maybe we advertise in ASGS, a continuois adevertisement for any one under 5 that encourages them to join the new server and seek out @Help. I imagine Tiger can froce an instant message for anyone 5 and under.
I don't have a problem with a specially tagged player only being able to do a particular thing . However I am sure Tiger could work that out.
NOW IF TIGER WOULD SIMPLE LET THE NEW FOLKS GET THE MESSAGE OR SOMETHING SIMILIAR I bet WE COULD HOLD ON TO MORE FOLKS.

Edit: this was written as cable posted and was directed at P1, not cable. Just wanted to clear:). Oh. And good post cable:)
Thanks for answering P1. I'd also suggest that refraining from calling ideas "dumb" might be a good start to getting others to accept your point of view. We are all working toward one goal, making alleg better. I'd appreciate it if you would help.
A few points I'd like to make:
If you volunteer to help, then You Arent being forced to do anything.
May e I did t state my point clearly enough. You wear the @help tag, what is the purpose behind it? In order to suggest ideas for retention of players, I need to make sure I have a full understanding of what that role
is and what guidelines are given to that role.
Now. I ask again (to everyone), we lose new players early on. What is the top reason for this and what changes (within reason) can be made to get more players to stay?
We also aren't keeping "vets" active at the same levels as in previous years. What can we do to increase the interest of the game to keep them?
First, before we go any further, decide if these two questions are what we are discussing. Then, let's move forward

So should I say an idea is good when it is clearly not?
Frankly, forcing anyone to play on XYZ server is a bad idea. A dumb idea. A not good idea. Use whatever word you want, I don't care, but it is something we should not be doing.

Don't find fault, find a remedy; anybody can complain.

How about newb servers that didn't require anyone to learn the tech tree?SaiSoma wrote:QUOTE (SaiSoma @ Jan 17 2010, 09:07 PM) Do we agree that the problem is in the introduction to the game? A lack of proper "leveling" for new players?
If so, let's brainstorm ideas on how to introduce some semblance of this into the game w/o changing the game at the core

take a deep breath and remember we are both on the same team. Saying and idea is "stupid" does not do anyone any good, Including your own reputation. You've stated clearly that you do not feel forcng players to play on a specific server is a good idea. I understand that. What I don't quite get is why u feel I am saying that. I am clearing stating, right now, that, even in my option for having @help on the newb servers isn't forcing anyone to do anything.phoenix1 wrote:QUOTE (phoenix1 @ Jan 17 2010, 08:55 PM) So should I say an idea is good when it is clearly not?

If @help were forced on someone, or if you couldn't fly without the tag, then obviously I would be wrong.
What I think I'm hearing is that u feel that having newbs fly on the newb srvr is a bad idea. Let's start with that. Onlauren at thetime

That's interesting. And definitely nothng ive heard before. Do u mean have all tech available? Like a special newb core that emphasizes certain things?raumvogel wrote:QUOTE (raumvogel @ Jan 17 2010, 09:05 PM) How about newb servers that didn't require anyone to learn the tech tree?
I could see specific servers that emphasize a given faction or a specific ship maybe? It would haveto be
ore than that, like an AI nme comm. Major codng changes? It would not have to improvise, just do specific things since it's a training excersize
can that even be done?
No, forcing newbies on the newbie server is a bad idea.SaiSoma wrote:QUOTE (SaiSoma @ Jan 17 2010, 07:07 PM) What I think I'm hearing is that u feel that having newbs fly on the newb srvr is a bad idea. Let's start with that. Onlauren at thetime

I've not suggested that in this discussion. Please take a moment then, and rereas my posts. I'm sure you'll have some good ideas to post if we can make sure we are understanding each other.phoenix1 wrote:QUOTE (phoenix1 @ Jan 17 2010, 09:25 PM) No, forcing newbies on the newbie server is a bad idea.

I think this is an excellent idea. I have seen a lot of new players asking for this info over all chat. If it was automatically given to them, more would definately use it. it is common place in online gaming, so would not be alien to most new players.
I see 1 problem with @help. I can only speak for myself, but I hardly ever see one online.
on that premise, i would like to put myself forward. I certainly know, 'I ain't no hero'. But i can teach some of the basics, which is what many new players struggle with.
If someone could point me in right direction, i will follow
