guitarism wrote:QUOTE (guitarism @ Sep 30 2009, 10:23 PM) Which is why I'm asking How exactly. If you couldn't do it before (and I know, I looked/asked/read) how are you planning on doing it now.

By doing a couple things:
1. Changing the way we recruit. Scrambling for a handful of cadets against the other 10 squads is not a way we can survive, let alone grow and get better. Instead of recruiting by experience, we will recruit by personality and potential. So yes, that will mean that some of our pilots will be fairly new to the game; but if they carry themselves in a good way, participate in the squad and improve their game-play I think they can contribute to the squad in a big way. I'm sure we'll get tons of flak for this but it is our best option and if we do it judiciously and intelligently, it will allow the squad to not only live on- but get good. Thats how Sysx recruited in their early days; thats how we're going to do it for a period of time. Also, with an expanded roster we can more easily boot people who aren't doing the squad any good or are not participating in SGs or on the forum.
2. Working my $#@!ing ass off to identify and get good people. The goal is to have a roster that can consistently show 12+ in time for the squad league.
DasSmiter wrote:QUOTE (DasSmiter @ Sep 30 2009, 10:33 PM) More like why bother?

SPQR really isn't much, not like there's some grand legacy (like with SRM) and you have not a vet to your name. Just disband already.
We enjoy each others company. We have fun. The reason why people are leaving is not because we suck- if that was why, they would have left a while ago. Its because we can't seem to show for SGs- and forfeiting games is no fun at all. The reason SPQR is special and has survived thus far with fond memories is that we fulfill a role no other group of people in allegiance comes close to doing. See, in allegiance new players are expected to go through cadet, and join one of the established squads with people who have been playing for years longer then them. Obviously, you can see the advantages in this; the vets can train up the newer players. But if the noobs #1 priority is to have fun and meet cool people, this isn't always the best way to go. Thats why SPQR exists; to allow new players to learn the game together with friendly, outgoing people, have oodles of fun and eventually (even if it takes a bit longer then it would in an established squad) get good together under the SPQR banner and kick ass.

As long as we stick to that ideal, I think there is no reason to disband.
Icky wrote:QUOTE (Icky @ Oct 1 2009, 06:14 AM) I mean this as nicely as possible:

A 14 yr old SL leading a mostly dead squad that, when it WASN'T mostly dead still had issues with quantity and quality of players is not exactly an encouraging formula for success.

You will ALL be better off joining other squads, learning, and growing.
First off, I know a lot of people don't think I'm mature enough to be leading a squad. There isn't really anyway to prove or disprove this, as its a matter of opinion. To be entirely honest, I'm not sure I'm mature enough either. I know what I've gotten into, and it scares me a little. Its a big job, and one that takes a lot responsibility to handle. But I have to try; otherwise I know that a month from now I'd be missing SPQR and wondering just why we disbanded and why I didn't step in to keep it alive while I had the chance.

I've seen a lot of people come and go in SPQR. By this time in '08, 2/3 of the members that had been in the squad when I joined a few months earlier had either left the squad or gone inactive. SPQR looked done, and it was only a matter of months in existence. But we completely reinvented ourselves, survived and had a lot of fun in the process. I have no illusions that its going to be sunshine lollipops and rainbows. SPQR is going to have most of our best players leave. We're going to suck for a while. But I think with a lot of hard work, we are capable of becoming not only a decent squad, but (with lots of blood, sweat, tears, and time) a top squad.

The real Roman Legion didn't give up. They didn't say, "ah, $#@! it, lets go back to rome" every time they got there ass's kicked. They stuck with it, and eventually conquered their world. We have the potential to do the same.

Why should someone be unable to lead a squad just because they're 14?

I would assume the mature ones know what kind of rep your age gives you here, and keep it to themselves. ;)

I think Spawn's smackdown of Brood and Cheezit's lil-engine-that-could speech are both worthy of a slow clap.

Now seriously if your gonna call someone out, regardless of your "UBER" flying 1337 SkiLlZ! Do some research instead of sounding like a retarded donkeys *#$@.
Now, now behave yourselves guys. But I can vouch for the difficulties with the command team at the time.

I'm not sure I follow this.

The #1 reason to join a squad is to play a squad game (possibly with fellow friends or druggies or dumbasses), if you want to join a squad you want to fly squad games. Anything else is just a group of friends.

At the very least, if you're going to insist on this idiocy, don't bother event makers to include you so we don't have to waste effort on it.

QFT: Squads are there to play SGs first, socialize second..
