Well, now they know I feel! /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Not to derail this thread or anything, but, who the hell are you? /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":o" border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> You sir are a complete enigma!

Immzy has stated that he has recorded footage of a squad game. So that might be an option. Cadet gives some insight into the squad games and goes into the detail of the gameplay and standards and I believe you still have the option of sitting in on squad games! Even playing in them if the conditions are right.

I may be wrong BlueC but I think the aim of the videos is to be supplemental to an already established regime. Or just to draw in more peeps.

I find FRAP's output very disk hungry, I record 100MB for a short gameplay. 25 FPS, 1024x768 pix.

However, after some tweaking I got interesting results.

1. I installed the FREE K-Lite codec pack;
2. I used the FREE Virtual Dub to compress the AVI to MPEG4. The 100MB file is compressed to < 14MB.

Not sure who can view the output tho.

mpeg4 demo movie 13.9 MB

Intel Video 4 demo movie 55.22 MB

Yea, I know I have to adjust audio levels /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Yeah fraps saves everything in uncompressed AVI so the files are huge. I bought a new 500gb external hard drive last week solely for fraps.

About the only alternative is ZD Soft Game Recorder. I purchased this because I thought it would work better for me than fraps. However I've had bad luck with it. Although you can pick your encoding options and all I haven't managed to find anything that will import into Sony Vegas or Virtual Dub. Then again maybe someone else might have an idea to get it working?

ZD Soft Game Recorder
Has a free trial but I don't remember what the limitations are.

FRAPS actually does compress the videos in their proprietary lossless codec. Its not as good as a lossy codec, but it has a reduced footprint compared to RAW.

I haven't found any lossy codec that can encode real time without disastrous results (exceptions are on machines like 4Ghz+ C2Qs).

It is easier to work on any pre-MPEG4 codec if you want to edit things anyway.

I found it weird that FRAPS uses it's own codec. FRAPS installed the codec on my pc. I thought it would be a standard AVI codec.

So, whatever the final format is going to be, some conversion has to be done.

If the video tutorial is going to be a success, it must be small and sharp enough to be decent viewable.

I salute the guy who's going to host several GIG of video tutorials, look at the bandwidth...

With the upcoming squad and zone events I'm sure there will be plenty of tasty videos... We should hire some observer ships with cams /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
