A better way? Well, I can think of several less awful ways...
FIRST, flesh out the requirements for what the page needs to present:
1. It needs this video demonstrating how fun Allegiance is (and here is the video)
2. It needs this brief description talking about how fun Allegiance is (and here is the text)
3. It needs the following action links: Create an Account, Download, Flight School, Screenshots & Media, Community
etc.
SECOND, describe what you WANT to see in a design:
1. The design should be light weight, but colorful.
2. The design should have a modern ajax/javascript driven feel
etc.
THIRD
1) Publish several different versions and have people vote on which one they like best - NOT based on content, but based on the overall look & feel.
2) Have the ZLs vote for what they feel is the best new design.
3) Ignore everybody and pick the best looking design
FOURTH
1) Get a finalized version of the design
2) Create an valid HTML/XHTML markup version of the design (The design itself should be an image, afterall)
3) Add the finalized content into the design
4) Tweak the site until it passes cross-browser compatibility testing (spoon.net/browsers).
FIFTH
Publish the new front page.
TBH, we could have done all this already if this initiative hadn't been horribly mismanaged - or completely unmanaged.
Latest Front Page
Changing to screen shots didn't help anything. It doesn't look bad, but they are too small to be able to tell what anything is and will not interest anyone who has never played Allegiance. Also for that matter the awards are pretty much too small to read. There must be a better way.
Maybe pick two of them and put them in one of the boxes in place of a screen shot. Could possibly change "Deep Gameplay" to "Award Winning Gameplay" and put them there.
unrelated edit: I never realized YouTube had pretty detailed stats. The downside is when it is played in a playlist stats do not seemed to be tracked. It may indeed be better to embed as a single video, but at a later time when I get some better recordings and get it to where I'm satisfied with the video. For now the playlist makes it easy for me to update it since I can swap the new version in.

With the current page, I think the award logos should be at the bottom of the page, they look wrong next to the allegiance logo, perhaps they should link to where we got them from?
Perhaps an awards section? Bit too egotistical? Perhaps a reviews section?
Also, The phrase "customisable ships" shuld appear somewhere, perhaps in large letters, probably under the screenshot of the GT fig loadout screen

Why don't use CSS where it belongs to:

With that small fix it would work correct in Opera, too.

The history of open-source Allegiance is paved with the bodies of dead code branches, forum flame wars, and personal vendettas. But a community remains because people still love the game.

put the video back in, if you didnt like flash video, consider video for everybody, it will only use flash if it can't find a better way to display the video.
Is it possible to make the award icons at the top link to the actual articles/sites that presented those awards? Or, you can make them all link tothe wiki page about the awards Alleg has won.
Also it'd be nice, as someone else mentioned, if the entire buttons were links, rather than just the text in them.
Pleeez? (puppy dog eyes)
Also: Awesome.
