As for Conficker,

It exploits a problem in Windows, first found in October, 2008. If you have let Windows have access to the Internet, as you would, because the AV/Firewall will be prompting you every other second, then nothing will prevent it from infecting your machine if you don't have the vulnerability patched. And as of now, every AV worth its salt can detect and remove Conficker.

Here's something for you to do. Get a plain Windows XP disc. No service packs, nothing. Even after so many years, if you install it and connect it to the Internet, within minutes, it will be infected by Blaster. When your OS is flawed on a basic level, little will help you.
I wasn't talking about a virus attaching to the installer in transit, but attaching to the file once it is on your system. This is more common. I havn't actually heard of a virus that attaches to packets in transit. It would be very difficult to attach a virus to a file because the file comes in pieces(packets) and those packets don't necessarily go through the same path to get to you from the source(load balancing). BUT if you are using one of those free anoymous browsing proxies to hide your activities I wouldn't put it past them.

Remember, very little is truely free. Even Allegiance is maintained at the 'cost' of this communitie's time and donations. If it is free, ask why it is free. Why is Allegiance free? Because we love the game and a community has developed around it. I havn't been very involved(besides these forums) in giving back, but I know that I can play the game because other people have given.

I think a computer is perfectly safe from infection if you are behind a firewall and don't browse the internet. If you ran XP SP1 and just played allegiance on it you would probably never get infected, but I wouldn't recommend it.
Blah blah blah blah (breath) blah blah blah blah (breath) oh, what was this thread about again......
