Being unable to hit @#(! (with a ping of 900 ms) is much worser than unable to dock without autopilot.

At the end of the speech we can say that lack of new players is due to GT' base doors....

Aren't we in a situation where the newer nVidia cards don't work with Allegiance without some adjusting (going with the experimental graphics). That may well have a lot to do with it.
Still, I'll keep advertising. I'll see if I can get they boys at Penny Arcade to acknowledge our existence.

...or maybe the game is just getting old and its tactics are so well-known to the original vets that it's ridiculous to try anything new in it? yawn.
Seriously, though, how long has it been since a new tactic was discovered in alleg?
...or maybe most of the guys that cared passionately enough about the game to contribute to it and play it regularly are gone and their loss is being underestimated. Now, instead, we get ppl saying things like, (paraphrased) "Sheff is a nut because he plays so much". Uh... isn't that what we're looking for in a pilot?
...or maybe it wasn't the asshats that were running the newbies off?
--- --- ---
IMO, there are 2 types of gamers, one that plays for fun, the other for reputation. It would seem that Alleg is losing its appeal for both types.

I do know of players who have joined, fallen in love with the game and then left after being repeated insulted by some of our vets. Not casual players either, but people who played 3 - 4 evenings in a week.
What the hell is it with the swollen ego of some of our people anyway? One would think that a a person of normal intelligence could grasp the importance of making new players feel at home, and also of not spewing their ridiculous drama at other long time players. There's only maybe a double handful of people like that here, but they do really harm our rep.

661 one actives on the leaderboard as I write this. Probably a new low. Bloody hell.
I think a large part of the problem is that the game doesn't work with new nVidia cards at the moment. If you install the game, log on to play and get 10 frames / sec or less, you aren't likely to come search for ansvers on our tech support forum. Hopefully our Direct-X 9 version is ready for general issue soon.

How long has it been since a "new tactic" was discovered in chess. It depends on what you mean by "new tactic"? A year ago, the common wisdom was that fig/bombers are useless. Fast forward past several games won (or hotly contested) by fig/bombers, and the opinion is changing. Rewind way before that and talk about Belter Tac. For the first year I was here (05-06), I hardly ever saw Belter Tac. In fact, while probing some imbalances on EoR, I recall TheBored exclaiming in frustration, "why wouldn't someone go belter tac [on EoR]?" A couple of months later, people figured out that Belter Tac had definite strengths, and we saw lots of Belter Tac for a long time. What else is out there?
Or lets look at something more mundane -- multitech. Yeah, TacSpan or Sup + Tac isn't anything new, but as with anything, it's all in the execution. Can you go tacspan and shave a couple of minutes off of hvy ints? When is the *ideal* time to buy that 2nd tech base. How efficiently can you run your miners?
These are all open questions.

No. Not a new low.

I predict the next fad to be rix exp-sup with exp providing hvy ints and damage/yield GAs and sup providing fig bombers and tp2.
Spidey, make it so.

You posted at 6:00am EST on a Saturday morning. I'd be suprised to see anyone on.

We might also be seeing the effect of less duplicate accounts on the leaderboard. Its something the @Alleg team has been focusing on over the past few months. Some people had two or three 'primary' accounts that we've weeded out.

I meant it in the context of the opening post. Was a steady 1000+ when I joined up, about a year ago.

Oh, and mcw, you don't mean hiders do you? There's enough people playing from several computers to effect the numbers?
