when i command, i will torture pilots that fly past enemy probes. i dont care if you only have a nan, you can ram the probe with your ship and kill it. allegiance as a game of strategy is very dependent on the intel you can gather either by actively scouting your enemy or with your probes. denying the enemy this same information is just as valuable if not more. so yes, probe and deprobe, you can do both!
having a probe net in one sector is great, but its really a mid to late-game luxury these days, perhaps more so under htt threat. just having one or two well placed probes per sector will do early on, although you should expect that your teammates are also helping to probe other sectors as well (coordinate with them so you dont both end up in the same sector).
there are few situations where probing/deprobing in your opening scout isnt the priority, here's a few (in order of importance):
0. you are the opening scout responsible for finding alephs for the cons to move forward to. dont stall the process by delaying the discovery of alephs by getting sidetracked with probing/deprobing. do what you can if they are in your path, otherwise find that aleph so you can get those cons planted and out of danger!
1. you're the nan for the opening con(s). you can still probe/deprobe but if you find that the con is getting ahead of you, you best abort and catch up.
2. you have just eyed the enemy's con and/or their d. go to stealth mode asap (lower shield/missiles). and continue shadowing them and eyeing them to relay the information back to your team whilst staying hidden. this allows your team to rally a strike force to repel their attempts to claim sectors.
3. you find enemy miner. dont alert the enemy of your presence! if you are still uneyed dont get eyed by going off to shoot a probe, instead hit voice chats to alert your team, similar to #2.
ha.. while writing this i remembered that i once wrote some guide to probing but couldnt find it... then by random luck, i found it.
sorry its not formatted well, its some copy paste from somewhere i forget, i'll get to it eventually but it should answer most of the basics.
