I have one thing to say, Phoenix Battle Manual, where are the mans for the rest of the factions? <yoda>hmm?</yoda> There are more detailed information on their tactics, therefore more confidence.

Double clicking the Academy icon on your desktop is a good place to start.

As a new pilot I'm going to say it's almost certainly the ship aesthetics, at least going by
this page.
Although I should note that page apparently shows a lot of Bios ships and stations where the *nix versions aren't shown/available, which probably needs fixing. /huh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="huh.gif" />

In my opinion its mostly the tech. I remember when I was a noobie, I didn't know how an IC int was better than a Rix int, all I looked at was the tech. Although I fell in love with GT and mustangs, most people take Nix because:
1. Vulcan Cannons
2. Drones!!!
3. Vanguard!
4. Laser Blossoms!? COOL!
5. Lasers!!!!
6. EXTRA MISSLES
Newbies don't know how to nan, some dont even know what it is. They just see the tech and fall in love with the faction. A better question is why none of them go crazy about GT. Maybe they dont know how to turret mustangs...

Newbies learn to forget about Phoenix in time. Getting the OMG SWEETZZZZZ tech takes time, flawless economy, planning ahead, the ability to defend flawlessly, and patience. These are things most begginer commanders DO NOT have the time to deal with.
Dont expect commanders to let you have your special tech without a fight either.
only experienced commanders can deal with these drawbacks, most can't.
Oh a side note, GT mustangs are even better with sup tech ftw. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> .

Coming from a voob who still likes Phoenix even after all the bashing... I can probably say that veterans tend to dislike phoenix for the very same reasons that newbies like it. In the main games, I see a lot of Dregh, Ga'taraan, and Gigacorp. I see some IC and Belters occasionally, but not as often. Meanwhile, you almost never see Rixian, Technoflux, or Phoenix. It seems like, a lot of the time, the more 'different' a faction is, the less likely it is bound to be played by veterans.
Phoenix, id say, is popular because it runs very paralell to conventional wisdom. When you are new in a game, you tend to gravitate towards what is most familiar to you. Phoenix seems to fit that bill perfectly, not only having relatively familiar ship designs (F-16s in spaaaaaaace), Phoenix also does not deal with that nanning wierdness and use conventional sci-fi technologies (laser cannons pew pew).
However, having commed Phoenix, I can understand that its a complex faction to comm. If you dont stay ahead on the tech curve, your as good as dead. I tend to gravitate strongly towards Supremacy, with special emphasis on ripcording and teleporter networks (I try to maintain a 1:1 ratio of inhabited systems to teleporters, if possible). Im not perfect at it by any means, but, I can hold my own.
The reason why I like Phoenix mainly has to do with the story, the designs, and the familiarity of it. I also like Belters for the same reason (Lack of shields dont bother me at all), although I usually go with Phoenix.

LMAO @ your factions playted list, there was a week where I saw nothing but IC vs Belts, I blame grav. TF is only less played because of the nerf, Rix gets alot more play time than you say as well.
