You get paid sick days and of course universal health care. You pay lots of taxes (I pay them gladly), but you earn enough and food is pretty cheap here.
Once you got to know Germany, you can travel to all the other countries in Europe. I have yet to find one that is a bad spot and I have been to many. The different cultures in such a short driving distance are amazing.

If you plan on raising children, the public schools are good and the university costs around 150 € per semester while offering you good conditions.
Germany seems great. I loved my time visiting there. Thanks for the info. I would also gladly pay high taxes if I supported where they were going.

I have a friend who recently became an expat in Germany. He writes for some kind of German MTG website who really wanted a writer who wrote in English for whatever reason :P He says it's quite nice there.

I'm not a fan of what you guys are doing with your energy policy but it'd be better than dealing with French people I guess ;)

Personally I'm eyeing Switzerland but only because CERN is there and good lord working at CERN sounds wonderful. First, the PhD though :(

I am also not a fan of our energy policy, but mostly because we still rely too much on coal. I am not a big fan of nuclear energy though, so I am quite happy with the decision of the past years to get rid of it.

Most of the people that work at CERN live in France though. It is much cheaper. :)
I visited the place once, because a friend of my wife worked there after her PhD in Physics (from Freiburg University). It really is a very cool and energetic place to work in even though the office buildings themselves look surprisingly old and crappy. Of course this was prior to the final discovery of the higgs, so it was an intense time. This is quite a goal to reach and I hope that you get in there.

Does this include the ITER project?
I would think you would love to work in France at that location.

On a side note it still bothers me that the federal & provincial governments wouldn't cough up the money to help build ITER in Ontario.
That project would have been built right beside Darlington Nuclear Generating Station which is about a 20 minute drive from where I live.
Would have provided tons of construction jobs and brought some of the brightest minds in the world to work & teach in the area.
Stupid government.
