Olaf Lies, a Volkswagen board member and economy minister of Lower
Saxony has told Newsnight some staff acted criminally over emission cheat
tests.

He said the people who allowed the deception to happen or who installed the
software that allowed certain models to give false emissions readings must
take personal responsibility.

He also said the board only found out about the problems at the last
meeting.

About 11 million diesel engine cars are affected by the problem.

Mr Lies told the BBC: "Those people who allowed this to happen, or who
made the decision to install this software - they acted criminally. They must
take personal responsibility."

He said: "We only found out about the problems in the last board meeting,
shortly before the media did. I want to be quite open. So we need to find out
why the board wasn't informed earlier about the problems when they were
known about over a year ago in the United States."

And of course last friday, Bernd Osterloh, Chairman of the Group Works Council, said:
"The unlawful behavior of engineers and technicians involved in engine development shocked Volkswagen just as much as it shocked the public"

Martin Winterkorn gets 94.000 euro a month as pension, according to the German paper "Bild".

Also some engineers seem to have made a confession.

Recent developments have me convinced of two things:

1. VW has decided to do it the dumbest way possible continuing to lie and cover things up. which leads me to believe the truth is bad enough to threaten VW's existence

We now have Dyson claiming that Siemens & Bosch have installed defeat software in vacuum cleaners to spoof an AAAA energy rating (I kid you not).

Apparently they are alleged to switch to half power when in a test environment - ie: not sucking up dust, switching up the juice when they are, to levels which would attract an E or F energy rating.

The EU seems to have implemented rules about max power consumption for vacuum cleaners (900 watt?). I doubt it will save much energy seeing how long my vacuum cleaner runs every month, and I doubt 900 watt is enough for proper vacuuming.

3.0L Diesels including 2016 have the defeat strategy too. Porsche has the stink touch too.

It appears more and more likely it is systemic rather than isolated and I'd be nervous for my job if I worked for them because this really really bad. They are reduced to bald faced lying which is apparently a betrer strategy than coming clean. This is the third time they covered up the cover up. How bad can it be?

Goes to prove the art of BS has advanced at a faster rate than the technology the BSing politicians expect the auto industry to conjure.

I have always believed that Diesel engines only belong in trucks and tanks.

One day my old cas will no longer be able to be repaired and I will take to walking or riding the bus.

You couldn't get me to buy a car nowadays unless you held a gun to my head.

Cannot blame this on politicans as other automotive manufacturers are complying with the regs afaik. This is about VW lying to gain market share. Remember they CAN pass but chose not to do so.

The length of time, extent of the cheat, and the reason is what is so amazing to me. How they are handling it leads me to believe it is systemic and perhaps threatens the existence of the whole company.

They are going for the denial and you're picking on us cause we are not a North American company. I guess I shouldn't be surprised as they pulled the same stunt last time too. The new head of VWa become the old head of VW before it is all said and done.
