I would start with David Eddings more famous work like The Belgariad and The Malloreon

well ill fiinish reading this game of thrones series, since i've already started. Then i may have to re-read that dragonlance trilogy i was talking about just cause i got myself all excited about it when i was typing that post. How gay am i. :/

I enjoyed both episodes pretty much because of the midget.

That prince is a little *#$@ though.

This is why I stopped reading halfway through the second book.

Hopefully HBO will be given license to finish things out on the screen after he cacks though because this show is excellent so far.

Well he has only two books left iirc, and he's got lots of notes for those, he just needs to not die and get of his ass and release them in the next 2-3 years, maybe now he's motivated...

this was true up until the series got underway, I've heard he has since left the showrunners sufficient notes/information on how he plans on ending everything should he die before it's complete

Martin is fast heading down the same path as Jordan with the time he's taking to get these things out, even though the quality of his work is so much better. Damn him!

For those considering Eddings, be informed that while he is enjoyable, the language and the plots make Harry Potter look like Shakespeare. I've read the first books of both Belgariad and Malloreon and found no reason to continue.

For a bit more intellectual and easy to follow work of fantasy try Ursula K Le Guin/Earthsea, for example.

While I read much more Eddings than that (I was young, don't judge me!) I find the above correct on all counts.

HBO is doing a pretty nice job so far. Danerys and the wolves are underused (and Dany's dark eyebrows weird me out), but Tyrion and Arya are so good they make the show by the two of them.

Eddings is 100% pre-teen fic.
It's on about the same level as the Dragonlance stuff - young adult intro to fantasy fiction.

That being said, I enjoyed both series (well, okay, I didn't read *all* of the Eddings stuff cause it wasn't all out at the time) and they're definitely good for some entertaining light fluff reading but they have about as much in common with George R.R. Martin's level of prose as a graphic novel.

And Martin's stuff DOESN'T HAVE PAGE AFTER PAGE OF BRAID-PULLING!
Although now that I think about it there's some excessive feast description in a few spots. Talking about hot fat from the meat dribbling down chins and in hair etc. cause we all know *that's* necessary to fill out a scene...
