Can we put that into the Tip of the Day thing or the Common Newbie Mistakes thing or something? Because every single newbie brings it up.
Dracus, you're wrong. No way around it, you're wrong about a lot of things there. Lot of it's understandable since you never went through AFS or anything, but you know what? On the internet, anyone can spew profanity! It's one of the things that makes the internet great, in fact! And pretty much every game without central moderation, such as pretty much every first-person shooter and space combat sim (technically, Alleg does have central moderation, but they don't give a $#@! and I love them for that) has that problem, and everyone who plays one of those games has to deal with it either by muting the offending player, turning on the chat filter, or growing a $#@!ing thick skin. I just don't get how people can be internet-savvy enough to find this game, yet somehow be unable to handle verbal abuse from a bunch of morons in a chatroom.
This is probably the best post in this topic. Jimen is bang on here.

he's right. we should have it so that anybody who enrolls in AFS is automatically on a required draft for squads (they can personally decline) but the squads have to take them and are obviously expected to train them.
WTF? Commies? For one thing, I'm the closest to a Marxist in this community (so far as the political threads go) and I've not even posted. Seriously, don't chuck words like Commie or Fascist around if you're too dumb to know what they mean. Also it used to be the case that a Cadet graduate was automatically accepted into the squad of their choice. This did far more harm than good to the squads, at least, the popular ones and was dumped after Pook complained about RT being too big through no fault of our own. If you want to join a squad, go read the wiki and find out how to apply.
Actually, go read the wiki is probably the single most relevant thing to say in this thread.

MY questions is; if he's a "gaming veteran" then why is he bothered by a little yelling, some profanity and the blame game? This is the Internet were talking about here - if I don't get a "$#@! you" once a day I feel like my day hasn't been complete.
And yes, to an extent I do belive that the rank system is unfair in that veteran players can be so HUGELY impacted by new players and I say that needs to change.
Yes, vet players can be so hugely impacted by newbies that they still keep their ranks. OMG HOW UNFAIR, THAT SHOULDN'T HAPPEN!
If you haven't even read/understood how the ranking system works, don't talk about it.
Anyway, please enlighten us with your awesome ideas for the best and most perfect ranking system ever.

This has been tossed around before. Basically people claim that they want to fly with their buddies and therefore they don't want to be forced into particular squads. The squads and the current set up have a long history of being the way they are. Most squads have celebrated histories and myths and loyalists and etc. Holding a draft is a pretty big upset to the status quo.
Also, the big unsaid part of it is that the talented vets like to fly with other talented vets and hate to fly with people who $#@! up the match for them. So they tend to congregate to the 1 or 2 best squads and thus you usually get 1 or 2 squads that dominate everyone else. Right now things are actually a bit better, as PK, SysX, XT and RT are all top-level quality and it seems anyone one of them could beat the other on any given Sunday. But BS, GB, Ace, SRM and SF really have no real chance of winning the squad tourney.
That said, I think it would be a lot more fun to have a true league where a draft is set up, and the talent is distributed, and then each year coming out of AFS/Cadet there's a draft for the talent, with maybe even trades and such. But none of that is really going to happen. We did have something similar, an AllegWars thing where they drafted players. What ended up happening was a lot of people who didn't like their teammates or saw their teams were getting destroyed each week just didn't show up for games.
