Privateer is right,it can attach to the download in-transit from our servers to your computer. One of the servers in between may have the virus and attach it to your packets.
You guys that say you don't need AV on you're computer:
Ever heard of the Conficker virus?
Are you nuts? I don't play Russian Roulette with my machine or my network.

Attach to files in transit? Please provide some evidence of this, both because I doubt that this is the case and out of general interest. Also, I don't see anyone recommending people ditch their AV product in favour of nothing. The is a subtle difference between saying it can be done safely and actually suggesting others should do the same. :)

Edit: The 'backsample' of this would be my saying that I've not come under threat from a virus for years. I would have been absolutely fine with no AV product at all. :)

You have another example... Windows can run secure without any AV software. :ninja:

You cannot "attach a virus" to packets. Don't spout movie lines please.

As for Conficker,

QUOTE worm exploits a known vulnerability in the Windows Server service used by Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 Beta and Windows Server 2008 R2 Beta[/quote]

It exploits a problem in Windows, first found in October, 2008. If you have let Windows have access to the Internet, as you would, because the AV/Firewall will be prompting you every other second, then nothing will prevent it from infecting your machine if you don't have the vulnerability patched. And as of now, every AV worth its salt can detect and remove Conficker.

Here's something for you to do. Get a plain Windows XP disc. No service packs, nothing. Even after so many years, if you install it and connect it to the Internet, within minutes, it will be infected by Blaster. When your OS is flawed on a basic level, little will help you.

After a recent fresh install of alleg, and using Firefox, I would say that this is a bug with Firefox, and nothing to do with alleg.

Just for clarity, all windows versions were patched via auto-update in Oct 2008 too.

Quite. From IRC earlier: "... idiocy is a virus writer's best friend."
