Maybe not, but decreasing their likelihood is an advantage. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Orion, ask yourself. Is legal action more or less likely to be brought against anything involving Allegiance if people are making references to things that are illegal in the US? Any need for further discussion?

Still costs to defend it. Cheaper to shut it down.
Orion wrote:QUOTE (Orion @ Oct 25 2006, 04:15 AM) the point is, if there are going to be spurious lawsuits thrown at an innocent third party (Thalgor), then even a rediculous amount of censorship isn't going to stop them.
It has happened once with the VC - which happened to be MS own thing, but Thal got sued. It has happened many times on TS when irate parents have grabbed the mic to ask people to turn it down.

Maybe actually turning down what pisses off parents will work. Unless of course, you have lotsa money and are willing to defend in court, you can host the lobby. Or, you can stop being an armchair lawyer and go add more features to TronBot. /ninja.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ninja:" border="0" alt="ninja.gif" />

So you are arguing that the spurious lawsuits are not spurious.. how does that fit into this argument at all?

No, they are arguing that some actions in game, in chat or on the forums are more likely to attract lawsuits (spurious or otherwise) than others. Do you seriously believe that chat about how nice ponys are is just as likely to attract lawsuits as people talking about buying drugs?

Now you can no doubt troll some response picking a hole in this line of thought but I'm sure you'll find that it makes sense to most people who read it.

Orion, lawsuits, spurious or not, cost money. So unless your willing to front all the money for the next time there is a suit, just be quiet.

Exactly. They do cost money. That is why when people threaten to sue it is usually a hollow threat.

There is something wrong with the country itself, if an entire community can be hostaged in such ways by the threat of a lawsuit. Actually, there are many things that can ultimately be turned into some lawsuit threat. Just be glad Bill Thompson doesn't have Allegiance on his radar. There are some wackos out there who have no life except to make others miserable by abusing the sad state of the legal system, which especially favours those with money.

Isn't there some sort of disclaimer that can be put into place? For example,

"Play this game at your own risk, if you do not disagree or dislike anything in here, please refer to the admins. In the case that the legal guardian or parent feels there's something offensive to them, you can request that your child to be permanently banned. This option is available at all times and will be honored as a resolution to any legal dispute."
